Default opinions on head/ cam combo??

Ok so ill have the money mid next month to get heads and cam for my ws6 Im looking for something street/ strip, not a DD, maybe drive twice a week (couple hundred miles) keep in mind I also would like to put a 100 shot on it later. Ive done the longtubes with 3 inch xpipe with spiralflows (no cats) dumped before the axle and a 3600 stall preparing for the changeover. Can you tell me a good head cam combo and power expected? Im having a hell of a time deciding. price not too much an issue, within reason

My old setup was PRC 2.5 5.3s, F14 hi-lift, and a useless 78mm fast. In my fat *** goat it got the car to run 12.00s at 117mph. Pulled like a ******* freight train.

Lots of options, I would definately go big on the camshaft if not a daily driver. Good luck!

Talk to Texas Speed and Performance, or SNL Performance in Ft. Worth. They can both recommend some good combos for you. You are somewhat limited on head selection due ot the smaller bore of the LS1. A good set of CND'd 243's and a healthy cam like a MS4 or SNL v.X (the cam I'm running) would make some damn good power.

Default cam choice

I am trying to decide a cam as well. I have the same yank 3600 SS but its still a stock A4. So i am gonna go with the TSP 228R. Small enough i think i can get away without blowin somthing up like that weak 2nd to 3rd shift. Or that awful overdrive band.

staying with a 228R wont save your trans, sorry bud. Guess youre just gonna have to go bigger. But seriously, that trans will not hold regardless of what cam you put infront of it. Build your car around the performance goals you want, not around your trans.

You ask if a custom cam is best, IMO I say yes. A custom cam is spec'd based on your exact setup and goals. The custom cam should come closer to delivering those goals then even most of PROVEN off the shelf cams. Nothing wrong with off the shelf cams, they have been R&D'd to make power in a wide variety of applications. I've had lg's g5x3, g6x3 and now a custom cam spec'd by Vengeance Racing. Nothing wrong with either of the first cams, but the custom really hit all my goals perfectly. More power, better drivability, less Valvetrain noise etc. Check out the link in my sig for a full write up by Ron@VengeanceRacing.

Good luck.

Almost forgot, you'll love the comparison afr 205 vs tfs 215 on my 402. Tfs 215's all the way man !!

I would look into the Trick Flow 215 and something like our RapTR camshaft. It is really tough to beat the power the TFS 215 are putting out on the 346ci motors. The last setup we did with the 215's/RapTR put out close to 480rwhp in a m6 w/ a 9in and twin disc clutch.

Thanks for the info ... nice write up Allngn! Ive been doing alot of research and the TFs 215 seem the way to go.
Im also waiting on results from the fast 102 to make that decision!
The cam I'm still trying to figure out, but custom seems the way to go to get both worlds. I really dont want to break into the bottom end or do flycutting but we will see.

Your welcome bro, and good luck with your project. Hope see you making good power in the near future.

On a side note, if you are worried about you trans, then you may want to consider calling the boys at RPM and ask what they suggest. Can't wrong with a built RPM tranny.

Again good luck.

I already did the trans, we will see if it holds up. Mostly because on earlier builds that was what went out first A wise old man once told me to start from the back of the car and work forward, I think hes right

I would have to agree. Next car I buy and mod will be done just like you mentioned. Diff, Trans, motor.
