Default Removing water pump to change heads

I just started taking everything apart today and read that I need to remove the water pump to change my heads. Why is this, it's not in the way? Switching from ls1 heads to ls6 heads #243 and re-using my rockers and push rods. Thanks

For what it is worth, the head-replacement procedure in the Service Manual for a 2005 CTS-V LS6 does NOT indicate the removal of the water pump. It does indicate the removal of the power steering pump. (I have been looking at doing my own head swap in the near future).

Darkman is right, no need to take the water pump off for a headswap. I don't have an F-body but on my 04 GTO the powersteering pump is bolted to the drivers side head so it does have to come off.

Don't forget the ground wires that bolt to the back of the drives side head too.

You don't have to take it off. However, taking it off will get most of the water out of the block so it doesn't just pour out of the heads when you pull them off. 6-bolts and the gaskets are cheap. Might make for a little cleaner install.

I didn't think it would have to, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Yes the power steering pump is bolted to the head on these cars also. Hey thanks guys I appreciate it.

Thanks, I'll be adding a water pump gasket to my shopping list.

yeah I started pulling my heads off this past weekend. Ive got the passenger side off. Just need to unbolt the powersteering pump and unbolt the head. Even though I already have a cam, I might switch to something a little more agressive. Pulling the heads isnt that big of a deal.

Yeah not to bad so far, except that I have to remove my entire exhaust to move the header out of the way of the head bolts, and since it was adjusted on the car it's probrably going to be a b!tch to put back on.

I got lucky, I left my exhaust all bolted up and had just enough room to pop the header flange out of the exhaust pipe and move it around to get all the head bolts in and out

unfortunitly no such luck on mine, but I'm going to try and pull the entire true duals off as one piece and hopefully they will go back on like that.

Ok, update. Pulling the water pump off helps quite a bit in getting the power steering bracket bolt out. I think it's worth it. Easy, and a $1.86 gasket.

** If anyone is using this info make sure you buy 2 water pump gaskets, you must have 2. If you have a 98 car and they don't have the gaskets. See if they have some for 99 and newer. They use aluminum and have a different part number and won't show up in their computer for a 98 ls1.**

Yup, that bolt behind the power steering is easier to remove with the water pump out.
