Default You MAY have a LS6 block in your FBODY

The casting number on an LS6 block is 12561168. This number can be found high on the back of the #7 cylinder by the transmission mounting area. (it is located on a pad). 10-15% of the 2001 FBODIES had LS6 blocks and around 25% of the 2002 FBODIES has LS6 blocks. The block material is about 10% harder than the LS1 block material. They were made in Mexico and the standard LS1 blocks were made in Canada. The LS6 block because of the larger vent holes at the base of the cylinder bores are thought to help in keeping some of the oil from causing fritional losses on the rotating assembly by helping the oil drain more quickly to the oil pan epecially at higher rpms. There is some thought however that because these vent holes are much larger than in the LS1 block's case that in EXTREME situations the block is weaker in this area.

This info was in Camaro Performers Magazine this month.

I didn't think it would be as much as 25% in 02.

That means roughly 1 in 4 of us 02 owners have one. Alright, whose got one!? I know I dont

Y2, that's what the GM engineer said who was in charge of the block development program.

John, It will be on the driver's side BACK of the engine block just underneath where the head meets the block. You PROBABLY will have to get a mirror to see it.

Darton says they like the LS1 block for resleeving more than the LS6 because of the bay windows as the removed material (in the LS6) is area that would be better used for securing the sleeves.

Also, a couple of different sponsors have said the difference in HP between the LS1 and LS6 blocks is hardly noticeable.

You can see it real easy if you lay under the car with a bright flashlight and look past the trans at the back of the engine. No mirror necessary.

I think mine has an LS 6 block. I looked at it today and it has the nickel sized casting embossment. Haven't checked the casting number though.

a lot of f bodys have the zo6 block they started doing it in 2001 --2001/2002 ls1 castings had a problem with oil seepage through the pores of the aluminum -well it turned out the ls6 also had the same problems "but not near as many"

LS6 heads would've been nice in an fbody. Too bad that never happened.
