Default L92 heads off, AFR 230 V2 heads on, 504rwhp 6.0L automatic!

I am so happy, you can't even believe it. Ever since the L92 heads came out, a lot of people think that a cathedral port head can't keep up. I didn't believe it and neither did Tony Mamo from Airflow Research (AFR). I own a 2009 Pontiac G8 with a 6.0L L76 engine. With ARH 1 7/8" headers, FAST 102 intake, Yella Terra 1.85 rockers, ASP 25% UD pulley, and Vararam CAI, the G8 made 397rwhp/395rwtq. This was one of the higher dynoing bolt-on 6.0L G8s. Most 6.0L G8s make in the 420-440rwhp range with bolt ons and a 230/238 cam. The highest number I've seen for a 6.0L G8 automatic has been 470rwhp and this one had ported L92 heads.

Tony Mamo and I decided to go "old school" and take off the Gen IV L92 heads and install a set of AFRs brand new 230 V2 heads. We called this our "Back to the Future Project". I had these heads milled to 65cc chamber so they matched the cc volume of an LS2 head (11.0:1 SCR). Then Tony Mamo did one of his famous porting jobs on a cathedral port FAST 102 intake. We used a fairly mild 231/231 .617/.617" 114LSA +2 advance Comp LSL cam. The gains were staggering: 504rwhp/440rwtq. A gain of 107rwhp/45rwtq. Keep in mind, this is through a locked-up automatic. Most people think that there is little to be gained over L92 heads, but thanks to the huge flow numbers and high airspeed of the AFR 230 and the "mamofied" FAST 102, substantial gains can be had.

There is still more power to be gained with a 102mm throttle body and larger airbox as we were pulling 5-6 kPa vacuum at WOT. Stay tuned for more details on the "Back to the Future Project". There's another 10-15rwhp to be gained with reducing inlet restrictions.

Man....Ive always been dying to use that icon.....LOL

Insert "DYNO GRAPH" instead of "pics" however and that sums it up for me!

I just got a text from Pat and quickly saw this post.

I have to say both of us were hoping for 475 RWHP (thru the A4 trans of course).

I didn't share this with Pat but after the recent showing with the 417 I just built and dyno tested with the same heads, I was secretly hoping we might see 485 - 490 RWHP but didn't know if that was truly possible with an automatic trans in the picture.

Can I call BS??.....LOL

Damn.....cant wait to see the dyno curve!

Nice job Pat.....who I credit with the perfect nickname for this project btw.

We started discussing this a long time ago thinking 215's but after recently completing all the R&D on the new 230 I changed my mind at the last minute knowing he was coming out of a 260 cc head....even the 230 would be plenty "crisp" on the street.

Looking forward to the rest of the data!

-Tony

Good job, good results. And with vacuum in the manifold there is more to come. New intake maybe and time to get it to the track!

Stock iridium plugs with stock gap.

No, actually I am using stock LS2 1.7 ratio rockers. My stock L92 rockers would not work because of the offset on the intake rockers and the 1.85 ratio of my Yella Terras would have made my net lift .671". Stock LS1/LS2 rockers for me.

Congrats Patrick! Those numbers are huge! I am suprised how much the AFR heads helped over the highly touted Ls3 heads!

Those are close to being Supercharger HP gains or a 100 shot of laughing gas..

What mufflers you going to go with now?

Thanks Brooke. Yes, the gains surprised even me. I'm going to enjoy the combo for a while, then maybe add some nitrous. I still don't have enough power to keep up with your supercharged Benz. We'll have some good comparisons at the Texas Mile since we'll both be running. About the quietest free flowing axle back mufflers I seen are the SLP Powerflos. I may run those or I may have Kurt build me something custom.

Can`t wait to hear the rusults of the larger TB! The transition of 90mm stock TB to new 102mm intake was pretty drastic.

How about using the C6 Muffler set up on your car? Lot of those laying around.

Nice gains!

Just curious how much of it you think are in the heads alone? Considering you went from stock heads to AFR's and gained roughly 20-30hp from the heads considering most people gain 60-70 from the cam, maybe 10 from the LSXR. Wonder what the gain is over ported and decked L92's? Maybe 10-15hp?

What do you think of the MAST Black Label heads... similar gains?
