Ported and blueprinted oil pump necessary?
Hey guys, doing a cam swap shortly. I've got most everything I need, and I've decided to replace the oil pump and the timing chain. Is it really necessary that I use a ported and polished oil pump? I know that 98-99 car's are prone to problems with the stock pump. I did a little research and I found brand new GM LS6 oil pumps for $56.00!! Would there be anything wrong with using that instead? It would save me a decent chunk of change. The other thing is the timing chain. My stock chain seems to have held up fine so far, can I just replace it with another stock unit, only a brand new one? I've never taken this car to the dragstrip, don't know that I ever plan to. It's my summer driver that I'm looking to get a little more *** out of. I get in the occasional stoplight brawl, but thats it. The point I'm trying to make is I am far from a hardcore racer, do I really need these parts? Thanks guys! -Mike

Most of the failed oil pumps with the earlier cars seemed to occur before ~35,000 miles from what I can remember. For piece of mind I thought it was worth to change out the oil pump on my 99 for a ported one when having heads and cam done. Since the new cars don't seem to have oil pump failures like the older ones did, I'd skip the ported oil pump on 01+ cars.
The GM LS6 oil pump should be fine. That's what I plan to run on my next engine not a ported one.
BTW where did you find the LS6 oil pump for ~$56 dollars?

I called Jason Chromer, he quoted me $56 dollars. I've found the rollermaster timing chain for something like 66 bucks from scoggin-dickey, and Jason mentioned that he stocks a GMPP timing chain for $77.... I'd probably just pay the extra 11 and go with the GM pump. Isn't the main benefit of a reworked pump getting it deburred, which should no longer be an issue?

I'd just buy a new GM oil pump from gmparts direct and replace the stocker with another stocker. That's what I did and my car has been fine. The timing chain I'd replace though. I went with a rollmaster double chain, but there are others that are just as good/better.

Just for a heads up, scoggin dickey sells the rollmaster timing chain set for something like 66 dollars! www.sdpc2000.com. What are the spacers for? Will the rollmaster fit under the stock timing cover without modifications? Thanks guys
