Doesnt matter, they are both the same. Crank turns once while the cam turns half a turn. Meaning the cam runs at half speed. So the crank at 12 is TDC for the number one piston. If the cam is at 6 that means you are TDC on compression stroke, if the cam is at 12 (then the crank will have made one whole rotation and it will be at 12 also) then you are at TDC on the exhaust stroke. Basically if the cam is at 6 and the crank is at 12, then you roll the motor over one time, then both will be at 12, roll it again and you will be back where you started.

I have always set the cam dot at 6 and the crank dot at 12, then used a straight edge and put it across the center of the crank making sure the dots line up perfectly. Easy way. Now if you put an aftermarket timing set on it Follow the instructions closely, My rollmaster set has multiple dots, because it can be put on multiple ways to advance or retard the cam...

You cant get it perfect, I mean it is only adjustable one tooth at a time. You get it to the closest teeth and thats the best you can do. Straight edges would be just plain silly.

Best way to install a cam is to degree and install with adj. Timing components. I can't install dot-dot. Just can't do it.most cams I install are custom grinds so I have to verify with spec card

^ I really should have, but I didn't have the know-how, tools, or patience for it.
