Default Started my cam install...

Finally, after tons of research over the years I've finally started my own cam install. Going with:

Comp Cams 227°/231° on a 113° LSA and 0.613"/0.617"
LS2 timing chain
LS6 Oil pump
7.4 Hardened Pushrods
Dual valve springs
Powerbond 25% UD pulley

Day 1: Remove hood, and radiator

Day 2: Remove Water pump, Alt., Power steering bracket, Power steering rack, and Crank pulley.

Got a little cleaning to do tomorrow then I'll move onto removing the Coils, valve covers, Rockers, etc. And hopefully, install the cam on Friday. So far, the toughest part by far is removing the PS rack. That was a lot of fun.... :leaving:. Very good learning experience as this is my first attempt at doing a cam swap. Should be lots of fun..

Yea, those P/S racks can be a pain. IF you ever expected to be swapping cams out any time soon or on any regular basis you can get a quick change timing cover where the Crank pulley would not have to be messed with which would be cool. But either way, just have fun.

Get your Aluminum Dowels cut to size for the lifters, do not trust the lifter trays.

How did you come up with the 7.4 Pushrods? Did you measure (check) or the cam supplier told you which ones to use?

Ok guys, I'm stuck! Trying to insert the 5/16 rods to hold the lifters up. The passenger side went in a little tough but the driver side goes about 1/3 of the way in then it stops. I've tried just about everything i can think of. I tried using a pen magnet to pull up the lifter but the rod still doesn't go any further than the 1/3 of the way. If i went to a smaller 3/16 rod would this still keep the lifters from falling past the rod? Any ideas??

Pull the rod back out and lightly kiss it with a grinder until it goes all the way in. Use the pen magnets if all else fails

Be sure to clean it up and lube it before each insertion

My drivers side rod just fell in, I had problems on the other side. Have you shaved the end to a round point? If it's not going in then there must be a lifter that's not up. Do you have pen magnets on the lifters? If you have the pen magnets on all of the lifters on that side I think you should go ahead and pull the cam.

I've tried just about everything. I guess it's time to call is a day and come back to it tomorrow. I got the passenger side in all the way and the driver side almost half way. I may get some pen magnets to hold the back two lifters and just pull them cam. However, I'm a little nervous about using the magnets after all the horror stories of the magnets breaking off. I guess if this doesn't work or I do break a magnet, it will turn into a head/cam project.

Wrap a piece of tape over the magnetic tip so it cant fall out and use a bit of patience pulling them up out of the pushrod holes. Most accidents are from carelessness

Quick question. I got the new cam in and now trying to install the cam gear and new LS2 chain. I got the dots lined up dot to dot and took a picture to make sure. Here are some pics of what I am looking at:

The 2nd pic looks to be dead on while the 1st pic looks to to be off a little. Same pic but different angles. Does this look right or should I keep trying to line of the dots where they look straight from all angles? Any ideas?

Zoom out and take a strait on pic like the second. Use a strait edge or draw a line on a photoediting program like you did there using estimated centers of the sprockets

It looks good to go though. When you're off a tooth its pretty obvious

Any tips on installing the oil pump o-ring? I lubed it up pretty good and installed it on the pickup tube. How do you know if its pinched? It's not sticking out on the sides so i should be good to go right?

nice work, wish you would have taken more pic. good cam choice btw, i went with the 227/235 .614/.621 113lsa cam. just a little bigger on the exhaust, your cam was my second choice. i got the higher exhaust to boost the exhaust flow for the little bit less exhaust flow i will see with the 5.3 heads vs the LS6 heads, but got the 227 intake for the good street manners.
