With a speed density tune You also have the chance of failing emissions testing, depending on state and county, as they plug into your OBD2 port their computer is looking at certain parameters, Kinda hard for the to see it if its been tuned outta there. BUT to answer your original question, Most dont reccomend a larger Maf such as the 100Mm unit on a stock displacement bolt on engine, some radical H/C/I cars need them because the stocker will max out. You can go with the 85 mm unit and I would venture to say youll pick up some power, but you will also have to have it tuned it with your setup. made 463 RWHP and 428 ft.LBS on my old stock shortblock with prc heads, eps cam, ported fast 92 and my stock maf which wasnt maxing out yet.

OP; an 85mm MAF will help your tuner a LOT though. The 100mm+ MAFs are a bit big, IMO. The "smaller" MAFs will have more air passing by the sensor units and therefore smaller changes in the air will be easier to pick up on VS the 100mm mafs. = Easier to tune and good drivability.
I was pretty set on keeping my MAF. I stopped by a shop here that will be tuning my car and the tuner said to just ditch it. I asked if it'll run ok, and he said yes. They run fine. He's done a couple TT Vette builds and he says it's really not a big deal to go MAF.
So I'll be ditching my MAF as well.

Some like to argue that you'll pick up a couple hp by going to a larger MAF just due to a lesser restriction. I wouldn't go any bigger than an 85mm though. But if you're going to be around 500hp, I'd do an 85 and wouldn't think twice about it.

o dont worry i wouldnt plan on going above that. Would it be okay if i just removed the screen from my stocker vs getting an 85mm?
if i fully diasassemble the motor, inspect all parts, replace all bearings, rings, seals, and bolts with ARPs, how much can my bottum end take? i no they are rated at 500 but not sure how much itwill increase after some new bolts.

If you have a stock mass air i would get the 85mm mass. I gained 9hp removing my stocker for the 85mm unit. I would not go speed den if you want to drive the car alot. The mass air is a better way to go for a street driven car. I have a friend who went the speed den route and is now going back to a mass air for his street driven car. Goodluck ta ya.

yea but i really dont see anything getting past the filter that would be unable to get through through the screen. but then again i would rather just have a screen just because. I like the idea of pickin up 8-10 hp like the guy earlier said. maybe ill find a used one. Thanks for your input fellas

The point of the screen is to straighten airflow and get more accurate readings, so I would keep it on any MAF used. I briefly talked to another member on here who used a big MAF, I think it was the PowrMAF 103.5mm, and he actually added a screen to it for more accurate reading, since it doesn't come with one.
