Can I port and shim my oil pump with 79k on it or should I replace it ? It's the stock oil pump out of a 98 Camaro.

if you're going to remove it, replace it.

do you trust an 11 year old oil pump? i wouldn't...especially if i planned on any rpm above that of the factory rev limiter.

Yes you can. I shim mine about .050 and gain 5 to 8 psi. porting pump is fine but keep in mind that the oil passage the pump aligns with in the block is the same size as the pump outlet...point is you will not get much more flow unless inside of pump has casting restriction or something. Make sure you center the pump gear with the crank gear...at least .001 all around. (the previous assumes gears and pump body are in good condition)

To be honest if your gonna remove it replace it, its not worth the risk, also GM made some kind of improvement on the oil pumps after a couple years of the production runthe newer style LS6s were supposed to be a better pump. You can buy a new pump and do the work yourself, however if you hit the face of the gerotor housing You just ruined your new oil pump. I went with the melling 10296 with the blue spring in it, I had a ported LS6 pump and the melling is a nicer piece. hope this helps also why are you wanting to remove it, are you having pressure problems?

No the only reason I took it off is to put a double roller timing chain on and one of my buddies said to port it and put it back on.

I hope you know the road your on with the double roller, I have a rollmaster double, You have to use the shims to clear the chain and the back of the pump,,but then the front cover wouldnt sit flush, took alot of grinding to get it to fit for my app. Hope you dont have such troubles. What a pita mine was.

^ There is a melling pump that is clearanced for the double roller. If you search on here you can find the part number. I don't remember it off the top of my head.
