Default Any of you ever Heli Coiled a rocker bolt hole?

Number 8 cyl intake rocker did not want to tighten up after putting new cam in and freshening up the short block. It got tight but would not go to 22ft lbs of tq. We tried loading it with Red Loc tite but it did not hold. Now im going to heli coil it

Any of you done this and did it hold ?

Yes, I had all 16 rocker arms bolt holes done about four years ago and not had any problems at all ,And i run this motor hard. Make shore you double the helicoils to get the right amount of threads in the hole, The helicoil is only about 1/2" long. Also here at work ive seen a 3/4" grade 8 bolt head pulled apart, and it was threaded in a Helicoil hole , the helicoil did not move.

Heli-coil is available in lengths that go by diameter. For example, a 1 diameter length would be 8mm long. A 2-1/2 diameter length would provide much more pull out strength then a 1 diameter length. Get the longer length. McMaster-Carr should have them.

Helicoils will always be stronger than the original aluminum threads. And the helicoil isnt likely to pull out either, the OD of the helicoil has a good deal more surface area than the original rocker bolt. I helped a buddy helicoil hi rocker bolt 8 years ago, and it held up for years without any problems.
