I have the PP 5.3's. From what I'm told the Viton seals were implimented in January some time. Mine were made in early December and I have the teflon seals. Terry sent me out the new Viton seals. If u just got the heads I would'nt worry too much because u would have the Viton's. Good luck with them!!

The older teflon seals were good too, the ones on my car are still doing fine. I was under the impression that Patriot recieved a bad batch of Teflon ones from their vendor. After the bad batch came in, they switched over to viton. If you haven't had any oil comsumtion problems within the first 1000 miles or so, you probably have the good teflon ones.

Can someone tell me what the new Viton seals look like. I read the older style used were white, but what about the Vitons.

My PP5.3 heads were made shipped out 2/13/04 and the seals are orange-ish brown.

My 5.3L PP S2 heads were one of the first ones out the door (circa 7/2003), and mine are orange-ish brown as well. I just did a spring swap, and verified the seals were not white.

So far, no oil consumption at all -

WTF.....if yours was made 7/03 they should of had the teflon seals.

I TALKED TO TERRY HIMSELF ON 2/13/04 TO DOUBLE CHECK THAT MINE WAS MADE WITH THE UPDATED VITON SEALS AND HE SAID THEY WERE......WHY ARE THEY THE SAME COLOR AS YOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phone calls are going out tommorw.

You have Viton.

The US industry standard color for a flouro-elastomer is the orange-brown color. Flouro-elastomers or flourocarbons (the generic name for Viton) can be dyed any color. I have seen red, blue, black, pink (yes pink..it was from Taiwan) and green dyed perfluoroelastomer.

FYI - Viton is a trademarked name of the EI Dupont Corporation. Viton is a flouro-elastomer or flourocarbon which is also designated as FKM.

Teflon or TFE (tetrafluorethylene) is typically white as an industry standard. It can be dyed, pigmented, speckled as well.

Viton is an elastomer...it is a rubber. Teflon is not an elastomer it is a polymer...a plastic.

I know too much about this stuff. I've worked with it for 15 years now.

Hope this helps.

The problem I had with the seals was burning smoke out the exhaust. I was sent the Teflon seals and the smoke went away and oil consumption was normal. So I said this in a recent post, that the Teflon seals aren't like people are making them out to be.

ive had a set of PP 5.3 Stage 2's (w/teflon seals) on my car for about 500-600 miles and ive already gone through 2 quarts of oil. terry has already sent me new seals, but they are not orangeish brown...

the rubber seals he sent me are dark grey and each one has a small circular spring that fits in a groove at the top of the seal...

im not sure what seals these are...

Guys, the Teflon seals aren't *bad* like everyone is making them out to be. They're just easy to crack if not installed carefully. Correct installation is critical. The few people that have had problems with them (myself included) are cases of bad installation. Simple as that.

With that being said though, there are better seals out there that last longer and seal better than teflon....VITON rubber (flouroelastomers). This is what I chose to switch to.
