Most of the synthetic folks say that you should use the manufacturers recommended dino oil for the first 5,000 miles or so to seat all the parts. Seating involves the first few microns (little tiny bit) of wear to smooth the fitting of the moving parts. To so that you need some friction (rubbing) to get it done. Dino oil gives you that. After that you want as little friction (rubbing) as possible to stop further wear, etc. Synthetic does that. If you use synthetic from the start, your engine will take mega-miles to break in.
That's the scoop from the oil manufacturers. The only change to that is if the engine manufacturer specifies synthetic from the gitgo. I believe some high-end Porches are spec'ed that way, for instance. HTH

I ran regular dino oil Valvoline 10w30 during my break-in period after getting all new rings and pistons. I ran mine for about 800 miles and drove it like I stole it after the first 20 miles. I changed over to full synthetic 5w30 after that.
No more p-slap and it runs like a champ so far. Pistons were fitted at a machine shop as a part of GM's warranty fix for a very bad case of piston slap.
I hear that not only does the regular oil help the rings seat better but also gives more pressure in the cylinder to help seat it. I am not sure if it is 100% true, but is just what I was told.
I do have a question on synthetic. My GM tech states that the SS had an SLP factory fill of Mobil 1. I have never seen this written anywhere. Can someone confirm this?
It is just a curiosity thing at this point.
Thanks
