Default Any benefit to a little RTV between the oil pump & block?

When I install my oil pump, is there any benefit to using a very thin layer of RTV on the surface that seals between the oil pump output and the block? It seems to me that just having the machined surfaces can allow for a little bit of oil to escape.

HELL NO don't do it! Even a small amount of RTV inside the oil passages is asking for BIG TROUBLES.

I wouldn't use anything but if I did it wouldn't be RTV. I would use an anaerobic sealant such as a very thin layer of locktight. Magnuson uses the same on their blowers to seal everything.

My pump is cut and has a o ring between the block and pump because they do leak.

Lots of little things with these pumps should be done but are not.

If you are not pulling the pump appart and centering the housing to the crank it is also something that needs to be done. The pick up tube also could use attention.

For more info on pumps that fix alot of issues call Tim at the Car Shop Inc. They solved all the little issues I found with a melling pump

Melling says you don't need to do it.

My oil pump guy says it is a must and Kurt Urban also says it must be done.

Car shop has a kit to do it.

There is alot of truth here, and I also mod ALL my melling pumps. I cannot find a link to that Car Shop piece you are talking about. Could you share that with me.

Thanks, Joe

You shouldn't really use rtv between machined surfaces like said above. If anything a small amount of anaerobic sealant can be used.

On mine I put a small drop of blue locktite on the pump, then worked it around the entire pump outlet while dabbing at it with a paper towel. It's a very microscopic layer.
