Default Road Race Cam Suggestions???

02 SS Camaro. 6sp manual with 3.73 gears, ported stock heads and cam With LT's making 400whp. I sold the Z06 for economic reasons and will keep this critter for the track...but I need a little more zoot around the twisties. It will be more track then street, but still need some street manners.

Ideas????

Take a look at the GM ASA cam....It's a little low on lift, but you could go with a higher ratio rocker later if you wanted more lift

I agree with Mark the ASA cam is a nice cam for road racing and easy on the valve train. Pulls hard from 3500-6500 and outperforms the numbers.

A nice bump up from the ASA cam with similar manners is the ISKY lS1 280/290. Is like .535/.540 232/242 113* We found it made about 15 more HP than the ASA, we shifted about 6800 with this one.

Also the Crane .551/.551 232/240 117 worked well in one of our motors, good torque and mid range.

We have seen about 180 mph at Daytona in 2800# stock cars with these.

Obviously you can go much bigger, but these perform well without stressing the motor too much.

If you have 400 whp now, that is not a bad start. Get some weight out of the car, maximize the suspension, brakes and the nut behind the wheel and you will go plenty quick with what you have.

It currently has a somewhat mild cam in it now that is easy on the valve train and very good on the street. We are removing weight, adding a few more suspension pieces to what we already have along with better brakes and I have been using this car the last 2 years in my RR ventures.

It's time to bump it up some as it now sees very little street use and the brakes and suspension are going to be more track oriented along with a new set of NT01 R compound tires from the previous bald set.

I sold the LS7 Z06 for economic reasons, and the 02 SS would actually hang with it on a short course but gives up 4 car lengths on a longer course, so although I don't expect to beat an LS7 equipped Z weighing 300lbs less, I'd like to close the gap more.

Thanks for the suggestions!!!

Do you want or need to stay with pump gas, or can you run race gas? Bigger cam with a lot higher compression could easily get you there.... Bump it up to 14:1 ?

I will run a 1/2 tank of 91 and a 1/4 tank of 100 octane when running at the track. The stock 241 heads have been ported and slightly milled so I believe the cr is around 10.5:1 now. I would not want to run anymore then 11.5:1 though.

I would think a more aggressive cam without being all out race, and perhaps a better set of heads may gain us 50-70 hp which is where I'd like to be. Thx!

it will take better heads and matching cam to gain 50+hp.talk to Patrick-G about a custom cam,the latest lobes that are easy on the valve train.read about his cam threads.he made 430 rwhp with a stock ls6 and a small eps cam,222/226-113 lsa.the car is full weight and runs 11.20s in Texas .

get a custom cam spec that matches your mods on the car, or if your looking at off the shelf cams you might want to look into the "StreetSweeper High Tourqe" cam

I was hoping to gain 25-30hp just from a cam swap. That would put me right at the front of the grop I run with, along with the weight reduction.

Gar, of the cams suggested, will they work without any valve train issues or piston interference? And gains with the existing ported 241 heads that flow 280 @ 500?
