Default Flywheel holding suggestions...

LS1 shortblock on engine stand, oil pan flexplate and front/rear covers installed. I need to break the crank bolt loose to swap the cam, the crank bolt will not budge with a brand new ingersoll impact wrench, I have tried wedging a prybar between the flexplate and the stand and it just slips before the bolt will break loose. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I stuck dropping the oil pan and wedging a piece of wood/teflon against the counterweight? Any help is appreciated, thanks

I had the same issue and resolved it by this. 1) I locked the flywheel by wedging a bolt thru one of the holes in the FW and the engine. 2) Then used a 4 foot pipe and wedged between the engine stand mounting bolts and engine and rotated the entire engine until the pipe held fast to the concrete floor locking the engine. 3) Then had a buddy stand on the opposite side of the engine stand to keep it on the ground and hold my beer. 4) Attached a long pipe on the end of my 1/2 breaker bar with the 24 mm socket and pull hard. It worked like a charm.

Pry bar through the crank pulley under the motor.

I kept braking pry bars I had stuck thru the back. I had to borrow a 3/4" drive impact to get mine off.

somebody apparently tightened that bad boy down pretty good. my 3/8 ingersol impact has taken all the balancer bolts off from pickups to the cars. how much shop pressure are you running? gm has a tool that bolts to the block where the starter mounts if you could get a hold of one. if not try to wedge a good flat blade screw driver or something through the balancer just be careful not to hurt the block or covers

Heat the bolt head for about 2 minutes with a small propane torch. I bet your impact gun will work then. Also use a 6 pt socket.
Worked in the car on my Vette.

I assume that your Vette had an aluminum block. This method will not warp the block. thx

You need a stronger impact gun or better air pressure supply. My Matco gun breaks crank bolts loose easily.

How would it warp the block?
Heat is only applied to the bolt head.

Default DIY Flywheel Stop

Here is a pretty sweet homemade tool TheBandit made to solve the same problem:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...6-0vvt-15.html

His build makes it sound like these are available for purchase if you are not up to making it yourself. Good luck!

32mm combination wrench and 18" breaker bar. I stood on the engine stand leg and pulled straight up at waist level.

If you have the flexplate on, then you can just use a pair of locking vice grips on it...clamp down anywhere(and clamp it really hard where you almost cant get them to lock), and when they get to the block, no more spin, then its just a matter of a breaker bar and the right socket to get the bolt loose...
this method also works on any automatic car...doesnt matter if the car is in park of not, the converter will still spin even if the engine is in park...need someway to lock the flywheel.......Locking Vice Grip is the answer every time for me...
