Default 5.3 head choice! Need help

I have one question. My 5.3 706 head need to be cleaned and a valve job. I have a chance to pick up a set of 241 heads clean, valve job, and milled .025 already done. Which one would you do knowing its a budget build?

If your 706s are castech then I'd go with the 241s, but 799s can be had for almost as cheap and decked .030" for a nice improvement. If you're adding a cam later then the 243/799s will respond nicer.

If your on a real tight budget look at the price of the fresh 241 and figure out the cost of cleaning up your 706 head and go from their. You dident say what you could get these fresh 241s for. If the $ are tight that would be the deciding factor for me

Running that cam is going to require a stall, tuning and maybe some gears depending on what you have now. With 706 heads I'd run the 212/218 or something close, but with the larger intake valve on the 241s or 799s I go with a larger split. Not to bash the thumpr, but it has a low LSA and high duration and I think you may be disappointed without a lot of complementary parts including a major tune.

I just picked up a nice set of 243 with low miles. What kind of cam should I get? It's just a street car. I would love a nice low lopping sound!

do you want power or sound ?the idle rpm and exhaust system will determine the idle sound.check out camquest6 at comp cams .maybe check out a Texas Speed cam pkg, cam, springs, push rods for $600.you can get a cam with a narrow LSA.

I'd look for something like the TSP 220 or an isky 212/220 depending on where you want your powerband.

Look more for sound! I want a good idle. Just a good even power displacement!

Depending on overlap you can get crazy good sound off just about any duration. A 210 or 212/218 high lift on a 113 LSA +4* should give you what you're after, but of course you'll need a tune.
