Bought a built LS1 longblock - I need advice for my build!
Hello gents. 1st post but long time lurker but I am needing advice so I decided to sign up and become apart of the madness. I am a long time member on many BMW forums.
Anyway, I am swapping a LS1 into my BMW. I am familiar with swaps but not the LS1 motor. So when a local shop offered a long block LS1 with 6.0 Patriot heads I jumped at it not knowing what I was really buying (money was burning a hole )
The motor was boosted with 6psi through a supercharger for only 6xxx miles and was in great running condition but I was made to believe I could use this motor for my N/A build.
What are all of your thoughts? Below is the build sheet. They gave me this info when I bought it. It is a LS1 out of a 2003 WS-6.
Patriot LQ9 6.0 - STAGE 2 (2.055/1.57/72cc)
GM MLS Head Gaskets
Felpro Head Bolts
SPEED INC LSx CUSTOM SC CAM 222 /228 .566 .571 LSA
114
Comp Chrome moly Pushrods
GM Crank Bolt & Seal
ARP LS1 12 POINT HEAD STUDS
GM12558573 GM LS1 HEADER GASKETS PAIR
NGKTR6 NGK COPPER PLUGS
ALSO, this was on the tune sheet:
Dyno Tune 98-08 LSx
Forced Induction
motor stock short block
injectors 60#
stat - 160
cam 222 /228 .566 .571 LSA 114
rev limiter
exhaust - off road
gear - 3.73
MAF...STOCK !
My questions are, from my searching people only run the big 72cc LQ9 Patriot heads with F/I. There is also a "custom SC cam".
It seems like a really high quality motor build and it is verified at only 36xxx miles and I would really like to use it BUT I dont know how easily I can.
My goals are 400-420rwhp through a T56 that has a daily driven feel.
So
Can I use it as is? Need different cams? Just sell it and buy a LS2???
Thanks for your time to read this all and your input

That motor will meet your goals as it sits! No need to change anything for your goals BUT if you felt you just had to... I would call any one of our great sponsers and discuss for you a purpose built cam. A cam designed for supercharged engines has different valve events than one built for N/A. While the cam you have is more than capable of meeting your goals a properly specced cam based off your your specific build could pic up a few ponies and also improve street manners.

Just keep in mind though you will be fine with the setup you have. While not absolutley necessary when doing tge cam swap i would go agead and swap valve springs. These parts have a certain lifespan that can be shortned with an aggressive cam working hard. The springs you have now may be fine but I wouldnt take their word for the number of miles on them. Replace them with the cam for peace of mind and security.

If you want more torque, you'll need a custom spec cam to get the dynamic compression up with those heads. Once you verify the chamber size and piston dish (if any) then it'll be easier to spec a cam to get the cranking compression up. That'll get the torque up and make that thing move. PatG costs $25 to get a custom spec through, but probably worth it. I'd also talk to Martin @ Tick Performance and Ed Curtis at FlowTech Induction. They'll probably all spec you something pretty similar just with different lobe profiles.
But I agree, the way it sits, it'd probably be good for 400+rwhp.

That cam is nice and mild, and will have great street manners, but the heads and cam are not ideal for N/A application. To get the most out of your combination, you can upgrade the camshaft, and heads (smaller combustion chamber for more compression).

I would just sell the heads you have now and pickup some ported 243's and call it a day. I think even the cam thats in it now will make over 400 HP at the tires if you get the compression up over 10:1.

yeah, 2002 sorry.
This will be the plan. I am going to get it in as is and go from there
