2004 GTO ls1
Hello all, I'm pretty new to the forum but was looking for advice on my new toy. I'd like to try to wake this beast up alittle but not sure exactly what directions to go and money is tight these days.
I would like to keep it to the street so not looking for anything huge, but would like to try for 400+hp if possible out of my goat. The car came with Stainless Works long tubes, flowmaster 3" exhaust with x-pipe, and spectre cold air intake. Was thinking for the next mods to do the ls6 intake swap, but i've heard the ls1 comes with an ls6 intake already, true? I see jegs has ls6 intakes new for $480. Also thinking about maybe using a programmer or am i better off getting a dyno tune? So any advice on whats good out. Any other advice is appreciated. Thanks guys

Thanks, I thought i saw some posts earlier about switching ls1 intake to ls6 was a decent mod, but then I talked to some people who said the ls1 already had an ls6 intake...... not contradicting at all. Was maybe thinking about getting rid of the spectre CAI and getting the Svede. I guess i didn't think about doing a cam, what would be a good street cam. Right now i use the goat as a daily driver, but plan on garaging it pretty soon after i find a beater to fix up so i kinda want to stick to something thats not too aggressive i guess.

As far as what would be mild. under 230 duration, under .600 lift, and a 114LSA. My TR224 114LSA cam makes over 300ft./lbs. from 2k all the way past redline. It peaks at 350ft./lbs. at around 5k. The numbers would be higher but I have 3.91's in the rear.
Good luck with whatever route you decide to take.

Alright you guys got me going into the cam thing and after doing some research i've kinda got my eyes set on a TR 224 .563 114 LSA and a TR 3500 stall. Do you think this will be a good setup? I've seen some posts about having to add a trans. cooler if i install a stall converter, is this true? and if so how big of a deal would that be? Thanks for the great advice so far.

A trans cooler should be used with any higher stall TC, since the higher stall speed creates more heat. As far as cams a with stock heads you could use a litte more exhaust duration, here's some I'd look into.
Futral F5(224/228, .588"/.576" 114lsa).

TSP 224/228 (.581"/.588", 114lsa).

CompCams #54-444-11 (224/230 114lsa, .581"/.588")

Alright, ive got my thoughts placed on a cam, but when i asked some of the guys at work they recommended waiting on a stall converter till after we do the cam. Is it converter necessary with this kind of a cam? If its something that its going to need then ill do it, but if i can by without it then fine too. Was told didnt need a stall unless im putting in a pretty aggressive cam which i dont think these are that aggressive. Advice anyone? Thanks much for the help.

Do the converter before the cam, or just do them at the same time. If you do the cam before the stall, it will be a bitch to drive/tune. I have an 04 GTO that I bought a 4k stall for. I am about to install that very soon.

Alright well so far, i've got the 3500 stall converter ordered, but kinda stuck on the cam part...... Talked to the guys at comp cams and they recommended the XR275, but there are two options for that cam. One being the High lift HR, or the HR 13. Told the guys i was looking for something thats kinda of all around performance and keeping it not too aggressive so i can keep it on the street. Anyone have any recommendations about this cam and which one will be better? thanks much appreciated guys!

I think the XR275HR would be a great cam. I dont know if it would need a 3500 stall though. You could probably go a little bigger on the cam with that stall.

99Bluz28 has some good advice/experience, so his recommendations are on point.
If you'd like some more cam advice, give Martin@TickPerformance a holler. He's very knowledgeable as well.
Tune is going to be the most important ingredient after your cam/stall/UPGRADED VALVETRAIN (Look into all aspects of performance and longevity of a cam upgrade. it sounds simple right, but there are many variables that take place in doing so)
