Default burning oil or not

bought this engine pretty cheap and took it apart. to built it. my dad thinks its burning oil so i have pics for you guys its a 5.3




cleaned piston 1 but it looked the same as others

Could be oil and/or overly rich mixture.
Did you do a compression test beforehand? That might give you a clue.
In the first picture, the lower coolant ports are completely blocked, compared to the upper ports. Did you clean/open the upper ports?

what are you wanting to do with this thing? are you looking to rebuild the bottom end? It definitely had something going into the combustion chambers. I agree with Gmag, it could be oil could be fuel.

id say it is . what year 5.3 is it? some with active fuel managment when the AFM goes they will consume oil. or if the oil diverter isnt installed over the oil squirter it will consume. also locked up rings will consume
