Default What would cause this??

Anyone know by chance what would cause both the cam lobe and lifter to wear out like this on a completely internally stock engine?

My only guess on a stock motor would be a rocker arm wasn't set right. Another theory is something unfiltered made its way there. How many miles on the motor

About 120k on the motor. I just don't understand how something like that could happen. The motor's out and apart now because all that metal had to go somewhere, The cylinders still look brand new and besides a few scratches on the bearings they still look good. So I guess I'm gonna do new gaskets, bearings, and a cam.

For rod bolts what do you guys recommend? I called my local shop and they said it would be $80 to press the piston pins out and $75 to resize all of the rods and $100 for the ARP bolts... Should I do that or just put stock ones back in it?

Stock LS6 rod bolts are fine for your purpose.
Any fluctuations in your oil pressure, beforehand?

Nope, it had about 50 lbs of pressure at idle. Thanks for the reply.

and btw I plan on only spinning it to 6400-6500 with the cam I've decided on so I guess I'll just go with the LS6 bolts.

The friction of a failed lifter caused it. The remaining lobes look ok and oil presser was ok. Likely the roller stopped rolling and ate up the lobe or it just didn't get oiled because of blocked passage? Does the roller spin freely? It hardly matters at this point, you have work to do. Look at it from a positive point of view, you'll be getting a valve train/camshaft upgrade.

What made you pull it apart? Noise or metal in the oil?

Curious, what kind of oil and oil filter used?

I won't be home till Monday or Tuesday so I'll have to wait to look at it but I thought it spun freely. And honestly, you probably won't believe it but I was driving it and it started knocking badly so I thought I spun a bearing but like I said the bearings looked good. But I concluded that it was bad gas because I was on E and I didn't have time to go get 93 so I got 20 bucks worth of 87 and shortly after it started knocking.

German Castrol 0w-30 at the time with 1000 miles on the oil and Wix truck filter.

Let me guess, this engine always had a slight knock?

Only when really cold. Which was probably piston slap. But since I've owned the car (about 1 year) it always just had a slight valvetrain noise at about 2000-2200 rpm.
