Engine developed rattle/ticking noise, what could it be? Does it sound expensive? :(
Hey, guys!
Just when I thought my 383ci turbo build is running fine, engine quickly developed some noise. In part that's my fault cause I went racing and back, about 500 miles, and during that period oil level dropped below minimum. Probably burned/pushed some oil on the strip, don't know. Although actually I heard this ticking (but very slight) also previously.
It's there between 1600 and 2500rpm approximately.
What does it sound like to you? Can I check something without taking engine apart completely?
Just when I thought car is running so fine - bam...

are you using stock GM rockers ?if so do they have stock trunnion bearings ?maybe check for a bent push rod.at night lift the hood and check for any sparks from the plug wires.test and inspec your plugs .

As GARYGNU stated, check at night for any electrical shorting of your plug wires etc. Could be a spark tick, even start of an exhaust leak.
Change your oil, personally I'd rather use something other than Mobil 1.
Could be a rocker.
Afraid it's going to be a pain to sort. From what you've said you'd been doing, oil change first
Buy yourself a cheap stethoscope or use a long screw driver with the handle in your ear, place it aroung the engine & see if you can locate the ticking.

I'm pretty sure that's not spark ticking or even exhaust leak... I've had bad plugs and wires, they don't make that metallic clunking ticking...
Simple things first, should I remover valve cover to visually check the rockers? Or I won't be able to visually detect the problem?

That's a bit of the problem too - we don't have Seafoam here, and since it is petroleum product, it's not easy to ship it from US too (and also 2 weeks waiting time)
Guys, if I remove valve cover, will I be able to find rattling lifter/pushrod/rocker? If it is one of these, of cause...

I've checked all exhaust manifold bolts (had to tighten rearmost driver side bolt about 1/4 a turn) and all plugs, all fine. I THINK it made the ticking a tiny bit quieter. Also I checked in the dark - no sparking under the hood...
So I guess I should start with valvetrain diagnosing?

Over time sounds became much worse.
Today I removed driver valve cover. What I saw immediately is that all rockers can be moved by hand side to side, with loud ticking (side play is I'd say 0.03-0.04"). Only one rocker was moving much quieter than the rest.
Is that a cause of rattling, or is it normal that they can be moved by hand with that loud noise?
Also I tried pushing on the pushrod side of the rockers but didn't notice any of them giving a bit, does that indicate that lifters are fine?
Here's a vid so you can hear the sound:

On that last vid, how long since the car had been run? Could just be the ones on the base circle had leaked down.
That said, the sound sounds like it is at full engine rpm, not half time. Can you confirm? If it is at full rpm that is a clue its not valve train. Hard to tell from cell phone sound, but it sounds like piston slap to me. Im no expert, could easily be wrong.

Regarding older vids - now it makes much worse sounds, even on idle
