can you tell if the rear main seal will leak before reinstalling trans?
By the subject line, what I mean, I installed the rear main seal last weekend, have not drained the oil yet(next time I work on the car I will) but since the trans is out still will I know if the seal is good if it doesn't leak all this week? or I will only know once the car is started again and running?
I just hate to put it all back together to find a leak after everything is back on the car..
thanks..

Sure you can. Throw on your flexplate and starter and start the car without the trans or converter. I believe I did this for the same reason when I pulled my trans and replaced the rear main seal. It would be a pain to find out it still leaks when it's all back together.

well the thing about starting it, is that most of the upper portion of the motor is removed or disconnected..
Im replacing the intake with the LS6, I have all the coil packs and cables removed to clean and paint the brackets, installing headers and so on..
So starting wont happen anytime soon.. I guess I can always finish up the top portion before reinstalling the trans so I can start before reinstalling..

For those that haven't read my post completely, ive already replaced the seal the first day.. my question is, since the car isnt back together yet, and since I never drained the oil, if the seal was going to leak, would I know before I reinstall the transmission? or the only way to know is to run the car and see..
I was hoping to check for leaks and fix before putting the car back together.

I would at least turn it over by hand with the plugs out to move the crank and oil around. Or with the coil packs still disconnected, you could disconnect or disable the full pump, install the flexplate and starter, and spin it over with the starter to build up some oil pressure. Just be sure to disconnect the coils and fuel pump.
Anyone see an issue with this?

I think that ideally, the oil needs to be warm/engine temp to give a true test of this.
I don't know how you would externally preheat it, but if you could, dump it in, then crank the engine.
It would be a good idea to connect an oil pressure gauge if you're going to crank much.
