Default camshaft retaining plate

Is it necessary to replace the camshaft retaining plate&the bilt-in gasket with each camshaft change?

Agreed...I've always reused them and have never had a problem.

This is my first LS engine build, so I can't say this from personal experience. I can only relate what I'v been told.

The plate itself will last just about forever. There's no real wear on them. But the gasket will not last forever. If you get a small leak there, you'll lose oil pressure and you'll have a bear of a time finding the problem. It was recommended to me to replace the plate, only because you're getting a new gasket.

If you can't feel the gasket raised above the plate surface, replace it.

Good insurance to replace it...You will loose oil pressure I believe if the gasket has flattened out...Newer plates have counter sunk bolts with them....

Service Manual says to inspect it and replace if cut or damaged. If you do replace, and yours is flat on the non-gasket side and not countersunk for screws. That version is no longer available from GM. The new version is countersunk and requires new screws and a new torque value. Some have said that aftermarket pieces are to the original design.

Guess what I am saying is if you replace make sure you do you research. You can't buy a new GM piece and install as original. There are several threads in this section and the Gen IV section that discuss this.

I replaced mine as the gasket was flat and I wasn't comfortable reusing it. I got an aftermarket Victor rienz one from eBay and it was identical to the oem one. They also have the recessed bolt version but you won't want that one. Cheap insurance, get it.
