Default Thompson Ported 243 Heads

Anyone ever give these heads a shot? For the price they look like a great option for someone trying to do a budget build given the flow numbers on the site. It would be interesting to see some numbers compared to some of the more common stock casting ported heads (ai, prc, tea, ect.).

I believe they are fairly new, so you're likely not going to find much on them. I know there was a set of TMS ported 317's in the classified section a week or so ago.

with a 235cc intake port you will either need big cubic inches or very high revving to make best use of these.

This is what really stood out to me about the heads. Makes me think these are just opened as much as they can be. It would be nice to see some real world results from these heads on a sbe ls1 or 6.0 motor.

Just because the intake port is 235cc doesn't mean that you need big cubes to take advantage of them. The smart thing to do is if you went with those heads, or any ported heads that have a larger intake port, would be to get a cam custom spec'd for the heads/combo. If you're worried about loss of low end power/torque because of the bigger intake ports, don't be. That can be helped with the proper cam/valve events.

That's a very good point. It'd be nice if TMS chimed in on the heads and gave us some more info and data.

My Thompson heads are coming in tomorrow actually. It's going on a stock bottom end build, so I can post up around beginning of November of the numbers. I'm dynoing on a heartbreaker so it should be some lower numbers than what most are used to.

I can say that Thompson Motorsports have an EXCELLENT customer service reputation. They have answered my phone calls without hesitation and always helped me out with questions and etc. So far, my experience with them has been nothing but completely positive.

sure I'll post pics up as soon as I get them. Unfortunately, I don't know the exact spec of my cam for it's still being grinded as we speak. It's roughly around the TSP Giant Cam spec.

Here's my setup.

Thompson 243 heads
Cunningham custom big cam spec'd for my build
BTR pushrods
BTR platinum spring kit
FAST 36lb injectors
LS7 lifters
Fast 92
Nick Williams 90mm TB
TSP true duals with bullets
SLP induction pro packs

I'm really curious on how the 243 will perform and flow. It's a mild-moderate kind of build without touching the bottom end. Thompson Motorsports have worked on my heads for 3 weeks before shipping it out, so I'm hoping it comes in pretty and ready to get to work.

I recently picked up a set of TMS 243s, along with a iron shortblock (forged, stock crank, .030 over) and a TMS/ Howard cam 232/236 .625 112. I can say service was top notch, but no Dyno numbers yet.

Breakin went well, and got it in for an initial street tune to swap in Bosch 42# injectors. Feels good down low, but still looking to dial things in over 5K RPM

I'm still chasing down a few separate issues before I'll get it on a Dyno:
- TR55 plugs not happy with compression and 93 octane // I'll try again with BR6s
- intake air temps really high (150+) with unshielded cone filter in engine bay // fabbed up a true cold air/ shielded design
- maybe LS6 intake is a limiting factor?
- stock master cylinder was having problems with McLeod // going to tick master

Maybe in the next few weeks I'll have numbers?

That sounds like it a great combo. Did you have Thompson do the cam as well? If you can, post up some dyno numbers after you get it all sorted out and broken in.

The chambers are the same, The picture makes one set look more polished than the other but it is just the angle of the picture. Our chambers are all blasted but not ported, We have found that there is gain but little and have had very little demand for the increase in cost vs gain. Thank you both for your business. We look forward to seeing what you both can do with them. Those are some great pictures that ya'll have taken of them as well.
Thank you,
Kyle

Kyle, are these heads used on your long blocks? If so, how have they performed?
