Default Stock Ported ls1 heads OR aftermarket which way should I go???

Ok I got me a thunder racing 224/227 114 cam kit coming, I lined up my mechanic to do the cam and figured why not do heads right away. Just thought I would get my stock heads flowed and get a 3 angle valve job...price is right at 1250$ BUT my mechanic tells me the stock LS1 head is no better ported than stock.... Any truth to this....?
-Is it worth another 1000$ for aftermarket heads?
-which aftermarket heads work best with my set up...?
I have all major bolt ons on a 98 Z28 and planning on going with a TPIS oval intake and TB.

Any and all advice I could get would be GREAT...!

The only aftermarket head for LS1s is made by AFR. I have yet to hear of anyone running them other than Tony Mammo from AFR. He has gotten exellent results with them. However any one else running ported heads is running a "Stock" ported head. There is plenty of gain in porting the stock heads!

Porting the heads WILL help, however don't get a 3 angle valve job, get a good 5 angle valve job. Clean and touch up the inside of the ports some and there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get 270-280cfm out of them depending on how much you work in the ports.

How many LS1s has this guy worked on? You may want to look into getting a mech who has done a little more work on your type of car/motor.

0, like I said his hard head gets in the way.... which is why he is a very good mechanic and can figure anything out he don't quit until its done right. BUT I am going to check some other places out. I rather spend a few extra $$ then wreck something... This guy has fixed just about everything and anything I gave him from golf carts to body work on limos and buses, but this is the first time he has ever hesitated about a install. I don't think he will be to hurt if I find someone else on this deal.
