Default Comp 918 broke with few miles

Just an FYI. A buddy of mine had one snap on him shortly after they were installed (w/ a C1). I don't know how common this is but Comp said "these things happen from time to time."

bullshit. if i spend my money on something, they better work. or they should be replaced. i can understand a material failing. i also understand the concept of customer service and replacement parts.

are they replacing his?

Sorry, I should have mentioned....

Comp will be overnighting a new complete set of springs and valve seals.

I would not hesitate to buy from Comp because of the customer service I've recieved in the past. I just wanted to mention this to see if others may be having problems.

new valve springs need a good "heat cycle" before they are really driven out on the road. my guess is he probably didnt heat cycle the springs....or maybe its just a whacky thing.

Heat cyling AT LEAST TWICE is a must, and 918's also should be warmed up to operating temps before abuse.

I am willing to bet money one or both of these factors were overlooked for a 918 to break that early. Those are good springs.

They were installed by a VERY competent mechanic and I'm sure they were properly heat cycled.

ahh yes thats great customer service. haven't dealt with them myself personally, but i haven't heard any horror stories about comp. 918's are def a good spring. what worries me are the stories that are starting to pop up about patriot gold duals starting to break. those are what i'm going to use w/my 231/237....its very disconcerting.

It could just be a bad spring. It only takes one to brake to mess anything up. I'm betting on it not being heat cycled properly being the problem though.

Thats why I call on people who say these springs need to be changed every 15k in a daily driver. I'll still be testing the pressure on mine in a month or so, I've got close to 30k on mine.

I'm not sure about you guys... but if I drop a valve, a set of $150 springs is the last thing I'm worring about buying...

I almost feel as though if it were an honest issue with the spring, Comp should compensate all damages. The problem is proving it was the springs fault, and not the other 100 varaibles.

I was one of the first ones that broke one about 1-2 years ago. I thought it was a freak thing that it broke within 200 miles and so did everyone else. But the next day a friend that installed his(got them about the same time as me) broke his with under 200 miles on them! They were heat cycled and everything was done to specs. Comp said there may have been a fault in the material made to make them so they switched boxes to ones with a stripe. Granted comp will resend you the broken ones, but um what if you just toasted your motor from the valve dropping? I was lucky that when mine broke the spring sorta wrapped together and didnt let the valve drop. They wont cover the motor since you are buying a RACING product.

best of luck and yes it will happen from time to time.. just hope no other damage was done. I was lucky though. Some had to spend loads of cash to fix their engine from the 918 breaking

That is old thinking. You have to check them once a year or every 15k but not necessarily change them and that goes with all aftermarket springs.
I would rather have a dual brake on me than a single though.

Why do I have to check aftermarket springs once a year or every 15K miles, when I can go 100K miles on stock springs? Why can't they make aftermarket springs to last 50-75K miles, or more? What's so hard about that? GM can do it, why can't Comp?
