Default Timing chain (double roller or not?) / Degree cam in? (motor out)

Long story short- motor is out, new cam going in, along with full rebuild and lots of other goodies. 66k miles on this motor. At the very least, the timing chain will be replaced with a new stock one. Is a double roller chain worth it? Where is the best place to get one? If a double roller isn't worth the effort (although not much more effort I guess when reassembling the whole motor), what is a good chain to go with?

Second question- With the motor out and completely disassembled, will it be necessary to degree the new cam in?

Always degree the cam in and yes put in an adjustable double roller chain if your spending time at the track and reving past the stock limiter on a regular basis. You can get one from several of our Sponsors, I used LS1Speed Inc.

if your taking apart the engine you should mark all parts (caps, rods, etc) with punches so it goes back EXACTLY the way it cam apart....probably not a good idea unless your a pro, however...

...replacing more than the rings and bearings will cause you to re-balance the internals...

...degree wheel is very good idea.....

I have a double roller chain which I like alot....

if you're puttin in a new cam, its a general consensus to put on a double roller adj timing chain. i got a rollermaster from a member off this board for a great price. it will go on during my install.

It all depends on the cam you're putting in. IMO double roller is overkill on small cams and runs into problems with aftermarket pulleys. Personally i'm going with a J-WIS. Stealth II cam.

Well how many miles was on the chain?
Or was it a new one.
As they get old they stretch and that can retard your cam and loose some power.

i'm going with a 231/237, which is a not so small(but not so insanely large) cam. double roller timing chain is just cheap, imho, extra insurance. and concerning the extra spacing needed, yes, you may run into issues, thats why you make sure you get the sfi approved model if you go with the asp pulley. afaik, that fits just fine with a rollermaster DRTC.

Isn't TREX more like 242/248 @ 050 .608/.612 110 LSA?

Correct, those are the advertised numbers, but the actual specs are never perfect. My last cam, the TR230, was supposed to be 230/224 .575/.563 111LSA but was actually 231.1/224.4 .575/.562 110.8LSA.

I think I got the timing chain taken care of, now how about degreeing in the cam? Will it be absolutely necessary to line everything up correctly? Even if it's not required, would I be stupid to NOT do it?
