Default Can't find pen magnets, HELP!!!

I'm planning on doing a cam swap soon, and have everything I need except for the pen magnets! I cannot find them anywhere!

Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone want to sell theirs?

Any help would be appreciated!

Surely there has to be a wal-mart somewhere near you! I picked mine up at Auto-zone near me, but then i found them at wal-mart for ~$0.50 less, oh well, still cheap insurance!

Believe it or not, the closest Walmart is 25 miles from me. I guess I will take a ride there and check it out. I went to a bunch of autopart stores and could not find the magnets. (Well actually I found one store with pen magnets for $9 each!

I wasn't able to find them locally at Wal-Mart, AutoZone, or Advance. Good Luck!

BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE PEN MAGNETS!!! I just did a cam swap on my car and I thought it was cheap insurance to use the pen magnets....bad idea! I had the autozone ones, and my friend put one in after about 8 were in, and it didn't click like a magnet touching the lifter....he pulled it out and there was no magent in the tip....spent two hours with lights and mirrors trying to decide if it had fell on top of the lifter. I don't think it did. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THAT THEY ARE ALL THERE BEFORE PUTTING IT IN. Check the tightness...they seem to be pressed in.

Wanna start it up, but it just snowed here..

OH, and I ended up not using them at all after that, I took them out and the lifters stayed no problem.

I didnt find any at my local Wal-Mart either, so I picked them up from Auto Zone. However, make sure that you look at all of them because some of them have gone to **** and are missing the magnetic piece. I didnt think that I was going to need them since my car only had 54k miles on it, but apparently that was enough to cause one of the lifters not to stay in its place. I didnt know which one it was, so I played it safe and stuck all 16 magnets in there. So to sum it up, just be sure that you buy good, complete, and sturdy magnets, and dont make any assumptions because they could cause you to make a very timely and costly mistake.

Wow, "cheap insurance" gone bad!

Thanks for the heads up. I will definitely make sure the pen magnets are in good condition before I do the swap. (If I can ever find them!)

Thanks, that's what I thought but I just wasn't sure.

Now, how do you use those during the cam swap. I understand they are used to keep the lifters up, but what is hold the pen magnet? Got to have hands free for the sawp, plus how are you supposed to hold 16?

You dont really need to buy 16 of them. I bought 10 and realized after that I only needed one. If you take all the pushrods out you can slide the magnet in the pushrod hole. Grab the top of the lifter with the magnet and pull the lifter up into the head. You should hear it click in its travel channel. Once you pull all 16 up till they click, there is no reason to leave the magnets in there.

Think of it this way. If you just rest the magnet on the lifter, the weight may still make the lifter fall. If it falls after the cam is removed you will still have to drop the oilpan. You would have to have the steadiest hand and be the luckiest person in the world to pull that lifter back up into its runner. The process isin't that hard, just take your time. Haste makes waste.
