Default Does bigger cubes call for bigger cams?

When you go from a 346 to a 388, 408, 422 or 427 how much bigger of a cam can you run?

From everything I know, yes. Bigger cylanders need more air, so more duration, etc.

I believe i remember reading something that putting a 27x cam in a 427 is the equivalent of putting a 23x cam in a 346. Compression will also play a role in this too.

And a solid-roller will behave like a smaller hydraulic cam.

Some cam designers have told me to add 6-8 degrees of duration when going from a 346 to a bigger engine.

PSJ, how much bigger of an engine tho? I always thought running a 26x in a 408 was akin to a 23x in a 346. Am I horribly misguided in that thought?

I use to have a 232/236 lsa 114 in my 346ci and now I have a 250/257 lsa 112 in my 408ci and the idle is the same. Even the driving is the same when it comes to rev's. As you can see we have people running around with cams 10 degree's bigger than my old 346ci cam and depending on the compression and head flow I think those cams idle pretty good. As for how big I can go w/out having to have the idle set at 1000rpm or higher I have no clue, but I do know that the only thing that saves me from not getting gears immediately is tq.. If I went with a bigger cam I would also go with more compression and flow to actually see a financial benefit. Maybe in this new year someone with a similar combo like mine will beat me on the street. I mean motivate me to upgrade to what FMS really wanted me to do. I hear many people say I have a max effort street setup, but I just laugh.

My best suggestion for people looking for the ultimate cam is to make sure they have the RIGHT heads to support the cam or the cam will just be a crutch. Nothing beats the right combo. Motor for motor I will put my car against ANY M6 408ci on the street and be totally happy with the results. Hell I will go as far to say I am not worried about another FLORIDA based LS1 car with a similar package. Do I hear any challengers

If you ever come up to Michigan, give me a call
Seems your setup is very similiar to mine and I would love to finally meet a car that can actually challenge mine on the street. So far I have yet to meet one. And are those dyno #s in your sig on a Mustang or Dynojet?

My #'s are dynojet #'s, but at the time I did not know one of my cutouts was disconnected. Now I have been on a Mustang Dyno with a 3400lb load and I put out 528rwhp/495rwtq with both cutouts open. My 408ci has been in two cars.. In my Camaro SS it put down 563rwhp/518rwtq NA on a dynojet with less than 50 miles on her and my SS had a mishap b4 I could put 2000 miles on the motor and dyno again. Now I have put about 5000 miles on that same motor now since driving back from FMS and my FRC feels stronger and stronger. The only change we made was a cam and header swap. Supposedly the C5 drivetrain robs more horsepower than the F-body, but who knows. Now if you feel like coming down to Florida and trying your luck I will be here.
