Default What heads with my 224 cam?

224int 224exh .581 114LSA

Would 5.3's be the best choice? I heard an LS6 style head is overkill. I originally planned stage 2 5.7's but everyone said get the 5.3's. The more I read up the more cofused I get. Mods in sig.

5.3 heads will up your CR More comprtion=more power

5.7 ls1 heads will keep your stock CR

5.7 ls6 heads wil up you half a point 10.5:1 so more hp plus they will have higher volosicty so you will make even more HP

If you can aford AFR heads i would go that rought.

most ls6 heads have 230+ port volume, that wont have a higher velocity vs a smaller head.

my vote would be a good 5.3 head.

5.3 takes my vote or AFR 205's. Velocity plays a big role in mild cam applications. 11:1 CR.

Ive heard alot of good things about all of the heads. I personally was considering patriot performance ls6 but desided to go with AFR 205s. Just heard really good results with those. Read back the last couple of days there are a few threads on that issue. By the way whats up with the 5.3 head dont know much about it? Anybody want to go into depth about them?

stg 2 5.3 heads.........you can pick those up in the $1200 range and will get plenty of air......

the AFRs are nice but more money........

wouldn't waste your money on 5.7 or LS6 heads.........

5.3 head is "designed" (from GM) to go on a smaller cylinder so it has a smaller cc chamber.....when put on the larger CI 5.7 it gets you up to about 10.8:1 CR vs. the stock 10.0:1 CR.......mill 0.030" and you are in the 11.0/11.1:1 CR range.......they will come from the factory (GM) with a 1.98" (I think that’s the size) intake (smaller than stock 5.7) and a 1.55" intake (same as 5.7) but you will want to replace the stock valves/valve seats with larger anyways (even if you had 5.7/LS6 heads) so that’s not anything to worry about......the ports are the same as a 5.7 head (the LS6 has some difference but usually good ported 5.7 vs. LS6 works out to about 10-15CFM so not a big deal)......

so when you look at all you get for the cost, you see why so many people go for the 5.3s.......99.9% of people will never need the "portability" of the AFRs and the LS6 heads are all about telling people you have them (I feel) ......spend the difference on something else to go faster.....

TEA Stage 1.5's are a proven head for a cam like ours, 224. AFR 205's would seem to work out nicely. Rapid Motorsport's Stage II heads are awesome also, i've seen 427rwhp with a TR224 thru cats with Mikey's heads. I'm running Patriot Stage 2 5.3L heads and numbers are in sig thru cats. LS6 heads are not overkill for a 224 cam but work better with usually larger cams. Patriot's LS6 heads have been laying down some good numbers of late and with their $1395 price are hard to pass up. 2001CAMAROGUY thqnks for the info! If money is not an option is the AFR the best head to go with? How are the patriots for 1395.? Take a look at my thread to see my intentions. How do you put in your sig? Thanks

well sure.....if money is not a problem then by all means the AFRs are a better head. They have lots more meat in them which makes them harder to warp/lift and they can be ported to the ends of the earth so you can do whatever you want down the road......I myself am looking forward to the small cc 225 AFRs being available......

as far as Patriot goes, I PERSONALLY wouldn't put a complete set on my car if they paid me........why? short answer = friend had them (I installed them) and after two complete sets they were still junk.......

now note I said a complete set.....that means valves, seals, springs, etc......I don't have any problems with the head its self (it’s a GM head) and their port work seems to work fine but I don't trust the hardware they put in their heads. If I wanted to use their heads I would buy a set bare (just empty ported heads) and then install my own parts.......then you have a good head....

edit: the sig.....go into "User CP" at the very top and there is a link to your sig....

you don't need that big of a head (225s) on a 346 anyways.......205s will get the job done.....

don't worry about piston notching though.....you can rent a "head" that has a notching tool from several of the sponsors and flycut your pistons in the car without any problems.........go with what you want.....
