Default Question on cam install

Is it wise or OK to install a new cam without upgrading to a LS6 intake?? I am looking at getting a comp cam that is off-idle 800 to 5800 RPM and was wondering if I should also go the intake at the same time. Will I notice a big defference without the intake?

I swapped my cam without the LS6 intake. So, yes go for the cam.

I will eventually get the LS6 intake to fully benefit from my cam, but I just went with the "best bang for the buck" value and went with a cam.

I gained 40 hp and 24 lbs of torque with my cam, so you will definately see good gains even without the LS6 intake.

The former owner installed a cam with the stock LS1 intake. I'm sure i'll get some more gains when i do install the LS6 intake.

BTW - Screw 5800. Go for 6500

I will be installing the cam ASAP then!! Thanks for the help!! Now I just need to deside on what cam.

There are actually 2 cams I am looking at. The first one being the one I discussed and the second being a 1000-6000 RPM. This motor is in a Jeep and I run it in the sand. I noticed that I actually loose about 2000 RPM until the real power gets to the wheels, so I thought by going with one of these cams I will make up the difference and have the power sooner!! I would love to throw a huge cam in it, but I think it would be hurting me more than helping. Am I looking at this backwards?

You're probably right in your thinking with going with a smaller cam. The bigger duration cams will lose low end that it sounds like you need.

Yes, you are looking at it backwards. I've been racing on sand for years. For the sand dunes, you want high rpm power, not low rpm torque. Torque just digs you in. You want to plane on top of the sand at speed, not go slow and dig in. Because as soon as your tires stop planning and start digging in, you get high centered and you're stuck. Make sense? HP is your friend, torque is your enemy on sand. And go with the widest paddle tires you can get. Forget knobies.

If I were you, I would do my research before you go and go nuts getting the first cam you see. If you don't, it will bite you in the butt in the long run.

There are a lot of cams out there for the LS1 engines, just ask around and get feedback from people on different type of cams.

Cams are like prison. You gotta watch out for your bottom end.
