Default run motor without water pump/radiator

is it alright to run your motor for a brief second without any water.. ive always wondered if it would be alright..im tired of making a huge mess everytime i drain my radiator and take my water pump off. WOuld it be cool to back my car out, drain the water and take the radiator out ,and pull it back inside...what about without the water pump?
thanks matt

if its a belt driven waterpump, you MUST remove the belt. if its an electric pump, disconnect it. you can burn both up in a hurry.
otherwise, you can drive it all you want, just keep an eye on temp.

When I replaced the water pump on my Ram, it still had air in the system. It would heat up very fast as I tried to fill the radiator as the excess air was pushed out. So, for a time I ran it with low coolant.

Also, on my old L98 Trans Am, it did the same thing when I replaced the water pump. Of course, it had an awesomely bad radiator, so it took me four days to get all the air bubbles out and all the coolant in. And that thing overheated about 7 times over a 6-year period and it seized up twice due to overheating (bad water pump and thermostat). So, you should be fine, cuz both of those vehicles now have over 160k miles and are still running perfectly.

Don't go trying to drive down to the local bar without the pump, but pulling it into the garage is no problem at all. I do it all the time.
