Default A Look at Oil Consumption vs Driver Habits

I read an article about how certain driver habits related to increased oil consumption. The Article Link. Can anyone comment from experience, either for or against this idea?

Since I have an automatic, I don't see the type of RPMs that were mentioned. Any thoughts?

I would agree with that 100% if you do nothing but race your car your gonna consume oil

I'm surprised the article didn't mention the revised PCV valve (it has no ball on the inside) GM released to help oil consumption. It helped on my car, but mine was never that bad, maybe a quart every 3k miles at most. Now it goes through maybe 1/3 quart at most, and with German Syntec, none. Mine also has some cold piston slap too.

does anyone know the part# for the updated pcv valve that will help with oil consumption? Also, which synthetic oil should be used in the winter as opposed to the summer? Does it matter that I now have LT headers also?

I run mine fairly hard, and I used oil up and until about 50K mi. Since then, I havn't used any. I have 68K on it now, and have been using Mobil 1 or Red Line in it since 34K. I have no explaination as to why it stopped because my driving hasn't changed, I'd say it got harder as I have owned the car.

The part number for the 'updated' PVC is: GM12572717

And from my personal experience I will say that driving habits DO affect oil consumption... If I do not rev the car up over 3k a bunch it does NOT use any oil. It NEVER uses oil when the wife drives it... But when I take it out for a 'beating' and I am constantly seeing 4 or 5k, I can lose a 1/2 of a quart in an hour (or less time). I try to make it a habit to allways check the oil before I go out for a drive. I think the extra few minutes is well worth the money that It would cost me to fix it...

Mine just started using oil since my last change. The car has about 54K on it. Never used a drop until this week when I gutted my cats. Maybe it's b/c I'm on the throttle alot more now, since it sounds alot better. It used a little over a quart in the last 700 miles ( I took a long trip this weekend). I may drive it easy for a while and see how it does, then try the new PCV valve if it's still doing it.

When i drive my car i lose about 1/2 a quart every 5000 miles. When my wife drives my car it uses a quart every 3000 miles or sometimes less. She loves to hear high rpms for some reason.

It is all RPM related for my car. Drive it to the track and made 15 passes and it was a quart low. That was over a time frame of about 4 hours. Topped it off and made the 2 hour ride home. It used no oil on the ride home.

Damn you're turning some rpms. How much do you spend in gas each week? I'm going to baby it for a few days and see if the consumption goes away.
