Default Drilling holes in your lifter retainers

Has anyone drilled 1/4 or 1/2" holes in the lifter retainers to facilitate oil return to the pan? I saw that W2W does it but tried it and the lifter retainer cracked. Is there a special bit to use?

Drill bits for plastic are different than metal. Try that?

Why not heat up a small round piece of metal and poke it through plastic. This won't put and strees on plastic.

I saw that on HorsePower TV when they did the engine on Project LS GUN. You could have put a piece of wood behind the plastic to give it strength.

Just start out small and work your way up in size. I put 1/2 holes in my retainers.

I used a stepper bit, did it cleanly and nicely.

We use a stepper or uni-bit and let the drill do the work and not apply a lot of force to the drill. When drilling plastic I let the weight of the drill push through the material while guiding it with my hand. This should avoid cracking.

I will add this to the list of "to do" when I pull the heads to change the gaskets this winter.

Checklist:

1. Thinner gasket to get better 'squish'
2. Go with head studs to make life easier when heads are pulled in future.
3. Go with header studs for same reason.
4. Drill lifter retainers for better oil return.

Tom97ss, hahah, you beat me to it, I just scanned that page for the thread too.

Taken straight from the How to Build High Performance chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s by Will Handzel.

It won't hurt anything, the oil makes its pass to the cam faster so why not if you have them out anyway.. I did it..
