Default 918's with stock retainers

I just wanted to make sure that you could use the stock retainers with the 918 springs....getting ready to make some changes

Yeah you can. I think if you use TI they will give you about 200-250 rpms more until you float a valve.

Been using 918's with stock retainers and 222/222 .566/.566 112 cam for almost 3 years and not had a problem at all.

Everyone seems to use them, but I read that the Comp retainers fit much better. If you don't want titanium (recent price increases are huge) then you might want to consider the Comp steel retainers.

I did the same exact thing (same cam), the I used the 918's with stock retainers on a TSP 231/237 with no problems. If the 231/237 were on XER lobes (it's not), I would not have used the stockers.

I had 918's with stock retainers and floated the valves at 5800rpm, but that was with a blower.

I'm going to run the asa hotcam its 226/236 .525 .525 110lsa with 1.85 rr on the exhaust so it will be a ~.571 lift on the exhaust. So I should be fine right?

Now that I know you're getting 1.85RR's, if you have the extra cash, get the retainers.

Whats the difference between the stock retainers and aftermarket steel retainers? Are they just stronger?

Do a search on this. I read here somewhere that the Comp retainers fit much better than stock. If you stay with steel, that will be the primary difference. For the extra $30, I would also go with machined locks.

i was planning to use the stock retainers on the swap, but after talking to comp and actually seeing how much slop there is when using the stock retainer with the 918's, i decided to go with the comp steel retainers. much better fit and zero slop.

Maybe a dumb question but what does the retainers have to do with valve float?
I thought that had to do with springs.

Retainers are weight over the valve and heavier retainers will cause an onset of float at a lower RPM. Therefore, titanium retainers are used rather than steel to help move the float point to a higher RPM.
