Default 99LS1 w 80k upgrading cam... Should I replace the rod bolts???

I have the engine out so it would be no big deal but dont wanna spend dough unnecessarily. Other mods include LS2 chain. LS6 intake and oil pump. TR224 112 cam. Longtubes etc.

I have read that the 99's had iffy rod bolts but wonder if they are a highly recomended swap or not? Gonna set limiter at 6400 or so. Thanks guys.

If you have the motor out I'd go a head and do the rod bolts..

Yeah I have the motor out cuz... well... seems us old school guys lose old habits HARD. Like trying to remove pilot bushings with the grease method.

Now I got a frost plug lyin in the bottom of the pan

Any others think the bolts need to go?

You shouldn't nee them. You are getting a 224 cam. You will peak around 6000. If you shift before 6500 then you shouldn't need them. However, I would probably get them as good insurance and if you went with a larger cam later down the road. They aren't that expensive.

As cheap as a good set of rod bolts are I'd do it just for the peace of mind which is priceless.... ..if ya ever go bigger on a cam and are going to rev the motor up higher your going to need them anyway..do not forget that the mod bug is addictive...once you start it is hard to stop...

I hear that re the mod bug... believe me you have no idea hahaha. I am certified car whacko this just happens to be my first LS1.

Anyways I can usually find plenty of info with search but the search feature on this site has been very bad lately hence all my posting. Cant find jack squat anymore.

Anyone got a good link for some recomended vendors with good prices on bolts for my apllication?

If your ever going to upgrade/replace the bottom end in the future, i'd leave them alone. I say this because the stock rods are crap. I bent 7 of the 8 rods in my 99 and none of the stock bolts failed. Kept spraying it for a few months until I finally broke a valvespring. Something to consider before you go tearing apart that perfectly good bottom end.

Katech is a sponsor here..they have the best fasteners..better specs than ARP..they build the motors that go in the C6R and all that were in the C5R's..bullet proof would be a good discription of their stuff..

id say you dont need them w/ the Tr224, BUT since you have the engine out and their only $60 or whatever and you could have them in pretty quick, id do it. plus if you upgrade to a monster cam that likes to be revved high, you know you got good rod bolts in.

Thats solid advice.... but precisely the kind of thinking that has led me to swap timing chains, New oil pump, Ti retainers, New pushrods, and so on. Just wanted to know if it was an overwhelming hell ya change em deal.

But then again.. sixty bucks? Almost seems a waste to not do it.

I say do them, I have them, but I still worry. If I didnt have them I would prolly not like to romp on the car as much. FWIW I have a 221/221-112 and rev it out to 6500 with a limiter of 6800.
