im thikning about doing a cam swap and i understand that if you swap a cam, that it is a good idea to upgrade your valvesprings and pushrods as well? or is that if you upgrade to a super agressive cam? not sure, but anywyas, how long did it take you guys to complete the cam swap with valvespings and pushrods?

I always set aside two full days... I have done it in one but it is way to stressful. Two days actually lets me enjoy the work, and pay plenty attention to detail...

Good Luck,

Actually if you put a bigger cam you HAVE to change to better springs.
Your first time will take a while. After a few you will only get faster and faster. I got it down to about 3 hours.

At first definately set aside a weekend at the minimum. My first one took 4 12 hour days cause it was below freezing outside and we ran into an assload of problems. My most recent one took maybe 6 hours with a lot of breaks and bullshitting. Plus not having to flip through the pages of your printed ls1howto cam swap guide saves you time

Give yourself 2 days. It can be done in 4 hours if you are good & know what you are doing. You NEED to upgrade springs & pushrods with a cam.

I would give yourself a solid weekend. Mine took all of a sunday and most of the evenings during the week. However, I pulled the heads off my car, so I am guessing you could do a little quicker.

A cam/spring swap along with an oil pump and timing chain takes me ~9 hours from the time I open the hood to the time I start it up after the swap. I have done 4 swaps including mine too. Just gets better with practice. First time took me a several days because of not having the right tools for the job and inexperience.

04 GTO took me 10 hrs in one day but I had to run out and get some parts. I would bet 8.5 next time (we'll see in the spring) Also your spring tool will determine how much time. The Crane tool where you can swap 2 springs at a time will cut an hour off easily. The springs took me almost 2 hours with a tool similar to the pics above.

I assume the time goes up incrementally with the motor in the car vs. out of the car. I would guess if the motor was out of the car it could be done in 5-6 hours.

By the time it takes you to take the motor out, swap springs and reinstall the motor.. you would have already completed the cam swap. Unless ofcourse the motor is already out and you are not going to put it back in after the swap.

You guess pretty good. The big draw back is taking everything out like the radiator and stuff. However, if you are just saying it takes longer in car due to lack of room and what not, I would say that's a minimal time difference. Maybe half hour to an hour at most.

If you are asking about taking the motor out and doing it (not already haveing the motor out). I could most likely get the cam in and started on the springs (maybe even finished) in the time it takes you just to pull the engine.
