Default Ordered my custom cam today...

Hey everyone....after realizing that .650" lift kind of worries me in a daily driver, I decided to tone it down some (well, lift-wise anyway) and order a custom ground cam that wouldn't beat the hell out of my valvetrain quite so badly. After much deliberating, calculating, playing with valve events and DCR, etc., I came up with my profile. I'm on stock heads until...well, I don't know when, until I find a good enough deal. I have every bolt-on except for an underdrive pulley and electric water pump (maybe someday). No cats, relatively free-flowing exhaust, 3800 stall, 3.73 gears, full suspension (minus cage), good tires, and about 250# of weight reduction. I was looking for a cam that wasn't as wicked lift-wise as the TRak, easier to tune, and while not radically different than what's out there, a little bit different than most cams. I wanted something that had a noticeable idle, smooth, well-distributed power band, nice top end, and good DCR. I'm hoping to run low 11's cam-only, and I see it as entirely possible. I may spray even though this is not a spray cam. I won't say exactly what the specs are until it's all installed and said and done, but think about it as being basically one of the G5X cams on a tighter LSA. Streetable, yet powerful and intimidating. Wish me the best...I've always wanted to grind my own design and here we are. Results will follow soon.

Definately sounds like you put quite a bit of research into this project. I hope it works out to your satisfaction.

I'll keep an eye out for your results. I am really interested in your cam specs.

I decided to go with an off the shelf grind from TSP (Torquer V.3) for my first cam swap.

Look forward to those results.

Good idea on going with the narrower LSA, but unless you're selling the cams in the future, you should really consider sharing your specs. This board benefits when we see what works and what doesn't.

Honestly, Patrick, you were my inspiration in going for a narrower LSA. The TRak just wasn't for me, as I need something a little lower lift. I'm sure I'm just being paranoid, but hey, it's my car so it's subject to my idiosyncracies. I guess I can reveal the specs, if it works like I hope, awesome...if not, there's no shame in going for it. So here's what it is: Comp XE-R lobes (I know everyone has them, but for the size cam I want, LSK's are just too high lift, plus tuning is so easy with XE-R cams now), 234/242, around .600"/.610" lift, and a 110 LSA. I was struggling with the idea of the low LSA and relatively large duration, and its effect on my idle quality, but the thoughts of a wider powerband, potential higher peak, better DCR, and the idea of something a little different swayed me. Plus, I thought about the G5X4, T-Rex, and similar cams and how streetable they can be....and I'll have one of the best tuners working with my car, so it should be good. I can't wait to get the cam and see how it runs, then add some heads to it.

If you want that cam to purr, go with a speed density tune. It'll tame it down quite nicely if you are at all concerned about the overlap.

about the tune, either one is fine. it all depends on what your tuner is good at and comfortable with as well as how much time he has to dedicate to the tune and how much money you have

That cam sounds excellent. How much advance are you getting ground in?

I'm getting in as a 110+2.

Thanks BTW, I feel honored. I'm just trying to make the best of an XE-R lobe.

You can even run alpha-n fueling if its very lumpy, some guys with jumpy cams have had good results with efilive custom os5's implementation of it. Should sound nice and angry anyway.

Hopefully it will pan out well. What would you recommend for heads? I wouldn't mind AFR's, but they are money. I was thinking about Darts as well. What should I look for in the right heads for this cam?
