Default This is a yes or no question.

As the title states this is a yes or no question. I recently purchased a Thunder Racing 230/236 on 112 cam. I have an 01 formula with 3.23 gears and full exhaust. My question is: If I install this cam, will I be able to drive the car around with the stock converter? After you answer the main question in one word form, please tell me what to expect besides slower 60' times. This is the #1 no-no in ls1 car buildups but I mainly want the sound.

Yes.

You will be able to drive it, but it will not act like it has the power of a cam.

Yes

The car will act sluggish until 3000 or so RPM's. Just get the proper stall converter. Why would you want a car that sounds fast, but isn't?

More bark than bite, but if you are not racing then it might be worth it to you. I have to have my power fix though, so this wouldn't be my choice.

Thanks guys, you have done a good job answering my question. Now, is it going to try to die on me all the time or pull through stop lights while im stopped? Fuel mileage worse or better with cam without the converter? Thanks again.

Dieing at stop lights depends somewhat on the tune too, it might try to pull through stop lights, & fuel mileage should be unchanged.

I'm a manual transmission guy so I don't have any first-hand experience with any of this.

You will also have some issues with the car bucking when it goes into lock up cruising at lower speeds. If you find someone good at tuning the engine and tranny you might be able to get pretty decent street manners. I would invest in about a 3200 stall with a tight STR, it would be so much more fun to drive and maintain good street manners.

Yes.

But without tuning and without the right converter I think you will have irritating drivability issues. You'll prolly have to wait until it's warmed up before you can stick it in gear and not stall the engine. And it might surge, buck, and bog at low rpm.

I love this board. I knew cam without converter is bad for power and didnt know what other issues it would cause. I am glad you guys know more than me. The deal is I have the cam, cam kit and money for install but no converter money yet. I am getting anxious.

Hell No!!! If that Bitch gets to surging, which is hard to cure even with a tune I'm going to see you on the Maximum Exposier show. However I got a nice little 210/218 551/551 on a 112 with 500 miles on it I will trade you and this is how big you can get before you need to stall. And its pushing the limit.

Your gonna need a tune, that cam is going to be a stalling issue, if your going to do the upgrade, take the time out and do it right.

Spend your money on a converter. There is not anything wrong with buying one part at a time, alot of us racers have to do that. However, you start opening the motor up before the bolt ons are done, you will start triping on your own feet.
You can have a car that sounds decent but will not run for the first 150 feet and/or have poor drivability or you can have a quiet smooth running car that has serous traction problems. Fixing traction issues is more fun than trying to fiqure out why that granny in the honda accord left you sitting at the light.

Awesome news man. If you install the cam and verter at the same time, you will not believe how hard it pulls!

Your gonna need a tune bad though. When I was cam only in my previous car, TSP 225/225 on 112, it wouldn't idle for ****, and was a pain at stop lights and such. I also had a TCI SSF3500 and the torque management was a bitch, it would KILL the power at times. After the tune it was all well, so try to get an appointment for a tune within a few days of getting it all installed.

Good luck and congrats!
