Default Tapping noise is getting worse*help*

Lets see if I can explain this. My car has 74,000 miles on it and for the past year or so, I have noticed that my car is tapping louder right after I first crank it in the morning, but its also doing it when I drive now! If I drive up to about 2000 rpms and let off, it sounds like a rain shower of valves? and it will do that all the time, just not as loud when the car heats up. But even when its hot, it still will do it! can anybody tell me what that might be. The valve covers have never been touched or gone into. everything is stock as far as internals! Thanks in advance

Landon

Maybe one of the rocker arms is broke? I found a broke one on my car last year. Do you change the oil in your car? If you do have you ever found roller bearings stuck to the plug?

That sounds more like something coming loose or going bad and not in the valve train. Open the hood and try to narrow down the source a bit...things like belts, pulleys, exhaust rattle or leaks, a/c or alt bearings etc.

I just changed my oil to royal purple the other day, but thats not it because its been doing it for a while. I do have headers but It did it before then too. To answer your question, I do not change my oil myself everytime, So something could have been in there. I guess Ill check my rockers and stuff one day.

yea i had that problem in my 91Z. it was a roller rocker doin the bobblehead in there. but my 91 has press in rocker studs and one was slowly coming out of the head. you should have screw in studs so i dont know how often people have problems with them backing out of the head. get a LONG screw driver... pop the hood... and put the metal end to the valve covers. put your ear to the other end... go up and down both sides. if its coming from under the valve covers... you WILL be able to tell almost exactly where its from. if its under there... take off that valve cover and see what the dealio is

I had and have this same problem alot. It is most likely a loose spark plug. I went through everything whenn i had this problem, and finally found out that the loud ticking was just a few loose plugs. Let me know if that helps.
