Default Rear Main Seal

I removed my rear cover main seal from my car while i have the tranny out and ordered a new seal. I found the part # 12585671 so i ordered it from SDPC and the # changed to 89018129 and came with directions that say:
The new design seal is a reverse lip style as opposed to what has been used in the past. THIS SIDE OUT has been marked on the seal shown in the graphic. This seal looks like it simply just goes right in. I heard of everyone else have to massage the seal in, but this reverse lip seal looks like it just slides right in??????? Anyone know???

i don't think my seal is the same as one you put in, it a has a reverse lip. So you don't have to get a lip over the crank i think this one goes right on

Yes, there is a "reverse lip" style rear main seal out there that doesn't require a special tool or massaging to get it on. It will work, install it 100% dry and there shouldn't be any issues.

The ring is to keep the inside from being damaged during shipping, but I used it for this https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...43#post4007543

I installed the reverse lip style seal last night- very easy to install no screwdrivers, tape, special tools, slips right in. I used a small 1/4 extension to tap gently around the seal until it was flush with the rear cover. I installed this without removing the rear cover- just poped out the old and put in the new

I tried finding the 89018129 pn at GM dealer, gmparts direct.com and even SDPC - think this number is wrong, everyone gave me 89060436 as the reverse lip rear main seal.

Glad to hear it went on well for you. Question - did you install dry as GM seams to want, or put any oil on inner lip and sealant on outter?

The 89060436 seal is a reverse lip type - came with special sheet of paper telling of the "this side out" marking on one side (hard to see for me ). Had the white ring also. OE date on the bag 10/23/2006.

I suspect either works fine, I put the 89060436 on today - went on fine dry, used 1/4" drive extension to coax it in. Getting the old one out with screwdriver took a little effort, definately more time than putting the new one on- didn't remove the rear cover, looked fine and didn't want to mess with re-alignment to crank and pan.

Cheers!
