What year car? What other mods besides cam? It's really a matter of rod bolts and such. Ideally, 6800rpm is what you'd probably want to shoot for. But, spinning a pre-'01 car that high can be risky with stock rod bolts.

It sure does, but you don't shift at peak power.

Because your car will be faster if you shift higher because when you shift to the next gear you will be making more power in that gear, because your at a higher rpm, then if you were to shift earlier because the cam peaks at 6400-6500. Even though it's not making any more power reving higher, the hp difference is substantial when you go into the next gear at a higher rpm.

My MS3 peak at 6600 RPM on my dyno sheet, I shift the car at 6800-6900 and I set my rev limiter at 7000, this is with a stock LS6 block.

6,800 RPM is usually a good point.

I wouldn't be afraid to spin 01+ motors to 7k and a little higher if in good condition. Earlier cars I would draw the line at 7000 for the rev limiter, but take it to 6800. IMO, some people underestimate the earlier cars because of weaker rod bolts. They may be weaker, but they certainly can't be weaker then LT1's, and many people spin LT1's close to 7k with good results.
