New Motor Smoking?
408 spun two rod bearings. A very good tech. went through the motor replacing bearings, rings, heads reworked, cylinder walls de-glazed, crank turned, and anything else that should have been done. He put reg. 5w-30 oil in for break in. We cranked the car and no smoke, it ran good. He drove it for about 20 miles, then changed the oil to 5w-30 full synthetic. He did say he put a full 7 quarts in instead of 6.5. I went to get the car today, cranked it up and let idol for a while. The car starts to smoke, and continues to smoke. At one point after revving the motor there was a rather large puff of smoke. I decided to leave the car there, and let the tech. assess this situation. I stopped in periodically during the engine build and know everything was top notch. This is a little mystery. Maybe it will be something simple. What do you guys think?

^^ above. Are you doing a soft or hard break in? I wouldnt change the il to synthetic until atleast 100 miles. Alot of people say atleast 500 if you are doing a soft break in. I'd drain it back out and put regular nondetergent oil back in.

The only thing that needs to seat would be the springs. Sounds like they didnt have time to seat/seal and need more run time. I would double flush the synthetic out of there and run it on the lightest oil there is for about 1k mile and see whats up.

Trying to work and fast finger typing, I ment "rings". But, now that you mention it, springs need a little somethin somethin too in the breakin period, but, it has nothing to do with synthetic oils.
