Default Help identifying metal shavings

So....I pulled the oil pan to change my oil pickup tube o-ring (low oil pressure problem), and I got a little surprise!! This is from my stock-internal LQ9.

Any idea what these are from? Some are metal and magnetic and some are not metal. None were stuck to the oil pan drain plug. Spun bearing? I didn't have any weird engine noise.

Possibly a bearing that is on it's way out....or has already left the building.

FWIW....I cut open the oil filter and it was clean inside.

I have driven with the lower oil pressure for about a week and a half....engine hasn't been making any weird noises.

Can I tell if it's a bad bearing just by looking at the crank, or will I have to pull the rods off to be sure?

I would guess bering also. It never got passed the pick up tube, and that's why there is nothing in the filter.

Pulled the windage tray, can't see anything obvious, no surprise there.

Question....if I pull the bearing caps and the bearing is good, do I still need to replace it? Or can I just put the cap back on it?

Still need to figure out where it cam from though. That would be a start though. Low Oil pressure is an idication of something slowly dieing.

Here's some close up shots of the bigger chunks. The shavings are very thin. Shiny ones are metal, I don't think the darker ones are. The darker ones are brittle and non-magnetic.

Those brittle non-metal ones might be lifter tray pieces.

So that's no big deal right? Maybe just some leftover flashing?

Anyone know the answer to this?

There are no hanging chads on the lifter trays at least not on the ones I've removed or on the new ones I've installed. I'm amazed that motor was still running with that much metal in the pan. It must have sounded like a bucket of bolts.

Is the black stuff soft? It looks like someone used too much rtv on something, to me. Did you check all the piston skirts real close to see if that is where the aluminum pieces came from? With that much stuff in the pan, I think I would do a complete tear down to find the problem. You have a problem somewhere and it won't cure itself. It's only going to get worse.

I'm going to go through and inspect all the main and rod bearings first since those are most accessible right now, sounds like I'll probably end up pulling the motor though.

No strange sounds or anything. Weird.
