Default Is an ls6 oil pump needed with a cam swap??

I've had my cam in for probably over 4 years and no problems with the stock pump. At that time, no one ever said anything about changing oil pumps. I've never had any problems that I'm aware of anyway. Would it be a good idea to get a shimmed/ported ls6 pump from somewhere as security?

I thought 98-00 had some pump problems. You are 02 so I think your golden. If you had an older model I'd say why not?

look at it like this...a ported ls6 oil pump or slp high volume pump is only 160 bucks why not get it since your already there. thats like swapping out the timing chain and oil pump and not getting the underdrive pulley. plus it will save you alot of headache. stock oil pumps are known to go without notice.

2001 and newer oil pumps have been good to us.

Melling oil pumps are good too.

You really don't even need anything but a stock LS6 one. Don't bother with the ported one.

Interested why you say that. I was thinking of going with just the stock LS6 pump but was kind of feeling like I would be neglecting my SS if I didn't go with the ported one. Please tell me in your opinion why I shouldn't bother.

It is a thread related question but sorry if I hijacked it a little.

Well, the ported pump is going to drop your pressure. Not that it matters any....it freaks some people out frankly. I run ported pumps in both my LS1's and only one idles less than stock pressure. If you aren't going full heads and cam on CID 400+ I don't really think that you need a higher volume pump unless you plan on spinning that bottom end up to 7k in your 346/347/382.

Agreed, you are fine.

For a 98-00 I would swap oil pumps, but in an 01-02 you will be fine.

I have a 99 model LS1. I bought it as a new crate motor and it's been sitting for a while. It's running nown and I'm puting a MS4 cam in it shortly and thought about porting the LS1 pump at the same time.

What's the difference between an LS1 and LS6 oil pump?

Cheers

Michael

The 'LS6' style oil pumps replaced the 'LS1' style sometime in 00. The older design has a little bit of a rep for crapping out and even putting pieces into the motor...as if oil starvation wasn't bad enough.

"Cheap insurance" to go with a newer pump.

Thanks, I'll put one on the shopping list for when I put the cam in.

Cheers

When i did my heads and cam i decided not to replace mine. Now i regret it and im going back in there to put a ls2 chain and melling pump. The old worked fine with no problems, but it will make me sleep easyer at night to know that they have been replaced with better parts.

i plan on just replacing the ls1 chain with an ls2. i dont plan on spinning the motor higher than 6400rpms, and ive got an 02. maybe addign a 100 shot later this year or next. either way, i feel my stocker is up to the challenge and itll work just fine...might get an ls4 oil pump since they are 65 bucks, but if they are still out of stock when i put the cam in, i wont feel bad

Look into gettin an ls4 oil pump. Supposedly it pumps more oil than the ls6 and costs less.
