Default Daily Driver cam for my Z06

I've been spending a LOT of time on CF and ls1tech trying to decide which cam is best for ME. I have a daily driver '03 Z06 with 1-3/4" Dynatech Longtubes and a Vararam CAI. I daily drive my car in stop and go traffic here in Houston for a total of about an hour a day. Below is a spreadsheet I made up with a bunch of different options, some fairly small, some a bit too big and everything in between just about. All durations and lifts are XER lobes from Comp Cams. I chose the XER lobe to stay under .600 lift to increase the longevity of my springs/valvetrain.

All highlighted numbers are cams that fall in between my conditional formatting. DCR: between 8.4:1-8.6:1, Overlap:0-5° and IVC 46° or less. IB is the difference between the IVO and EVC to see how much intake bias there is (how relevant that is, I'm not sure ). All values are calculated with the PianoProdigy spreadsheet, with values provided for the LS1/LS6.

I hope ya'll will take a look at what I have, please comment on my parameters for a daily driver, recommend something else, criticize, everything! I would like to go as big as possible (of course) without hating my car.

I have an 01 Z06 with a cam and wanted a good daily driver cam..and went with a 224/224 114lsa and now wish I had listened to my tuner and gone with a bigger cam.

Take my suggestion and go with a bigger cam.

Good luck deciding.

415rwhp seems very good for an '01 Z. How much bigger would you have gone? Would you rather have more top end than a wide torque curve with the 224?

I will be daily driving my 03 Z06 and just purchased a G5X3 on a 112LSA.

Take into account that your Z weighs ALOT less than an Fbody, so you can afford to not make monster tourque down low and still have the car be very responsive under 4000 RPM.

G5X3 on a 112LSA is a nice cam although I'd probably go with 114lsa if it were available...

My tuner at the time was TTP and they were great guys...They were recommending the equilizer cam which is similiar in many ways to the G5 X3 I'd imagine....

I was concerned and thought 400rwhp would have been a big enough leap from 330 rwhp these cars make stock...

It was for about 6 months of street driving and then I was sorry I didn't go with a larger cam...

At the very least I would do a 224/228 (I can't remember the specs exactly)114lsa cam that seems to work so well with the AFR heads of tony mamo...

The 224/224 114lsa is a little too mild. IMO For the first 6 months its great and then you want more.

My initial concern as it is for many of us was for a street driven vehicle and civility was a key concern...and the 224/224 114lsa cam is a too small. I could have gone bigger, had a few more laughs and still had the civility.

Try and hook up with a few modded car owners and go for a ride...

(some think the 224/224 114lsa is a perfect daily driver cam so take my opinion as just that)

Good luck.

For that kind of stop and go daily driving, I think you'd wind up getting tired of a cam with 10 degrees of overlap. If it were a toy, I'd say go for 15 degrees of overlap though. 6 degrees of overlap is very nice. Of all the cams that have that kind of overlap, I like this one the best:
228/232 112LSA +4

It's really a matter of personal choice but I wouldn't mind daily driving my cam. I was in a Christmas parade for several miles and it was no worse than if the car was stock, which means it still has a fair amount of low end torque. Plus, the cam in my car has a pretty good chop at idle and that always puts a smile on my face.

Do you think I will loose low end torque with this cam?

No, with the large increase in dynamic compression, you would actually gain low end torque vs stock (I'm talking 2000-3000rpm). From 1000-2000 rpm, the stock cam will be a little crisper, but not by much.

After reading multiple threads on here, I think the cam I will go with will be at least a 228. Ive pretty much narrowed it down to the 228 or the torquer 2. 02 WS6, M6, daily driver (even though its only driven about 10 miles a day).

I've gotta be able to drive my car in pretty bad stop and go traffic. If I can let the clutch out and idle down the road without serious bucking/surging I will be very happy. If I have to rev to 1500 just to get going, I will be running into the back of the car in front of me.
Just to get an idea of the traffic I sit in. 11 miles takes 45 minutes on my way to work

All I know is that I've rode in both an MTI X1 and 228R cam only cars (Z06's). Both got up and went, but left alot to be desired. And to be completely honest, the idle was way too similar to my stock cammed car for the money spent on the swap.

The Torquer 2 was my other choice.

I just installed the Patriot 226/.585 cam with 112 + 4 this past Sunday. I also installed a full Kooks exhaust system and ported 243 heads with Cometic .045 gaskets DCR with 64cc heads worked out to 8.6. I have to wait till Tuesday for a tune by Allan at Futral motor sports. This is in an 04 Z06 and I am pleased with the low end response and the idle is choppy. I have only taken it to 6g (heat cycling new springs) and it is a different animal than stock!!! Without the benefit of a tune, I do have to bring the revs up just a little to get rolling, I think this will be better after it has been tuned as I can smell a lot of raw gas at ldle now.
Houston traffic, UGH!!!!!
Cheers,
DD

FWIW on my 01 Z06 with the only mods being LG headers with cats, halltech instake, 918's with titanium retainers, and a MTI stealth II cam I put down 401rwhp with limited tuning.

This cam drove just like stock but better everywhere, I wanted the z06 just more of it remember the stock 01 cam has the same LSA at 116. The increase in noise came from the valvetrain more than anything. My wife drove the car all the time and she hated my H/C WS6 with a larger cam.

Now I do agree with the rest of these guys that bigger is better and really like Patricks recommendation. But for a DD the MTI stealh II was a nice setup...
