Default Removing crank bolt with engine out?

It was easy to break the bolt free when I had to while the engine was in the car. Just put the transmission in gear and it held the crank in place, but now the engine is out of the car. Does anyone have any tricks for holding the crank in place while breaking the bolt free? All I can think of is putting the flywheel back on and trying to hold it in place while torquing on the crank bolt, but I cant get the flywheel on if the engine is bolted to the engine stand.

Can you get a couple of old bolt into the holes for the flywheel? Then just use a pipe or something to hold it, stuck in between the bolts.

There are tools that will hold the balancer in place (Summit Racing has one as other tool manufactors) while you turn the balancer bolt.

I have at times just stuck a big screw driver in one of the holes in the flywheel and let it stop against the block as it turns. then just get a big breaker bar and a 3-4' pipe.

Warning. if the engine is on a engine Stand, be carefull that you don't tip the motor over !

There is a tool that has teeth to line up with the flywheel/flexplate that you can by. I believe it bolts to the block somehow.

You could also try a big old strap wrench around the pulley, but you would need a big one...

Even with the speical tools and strap wrenches.. you still need to have help as someone has to hold the wrench and someone turning the nut.. so.. you have depending on what you are doing (removing or putting on).. fighting that 240lbs of TQ to turn the nut tight or loosen.

I tried one of the speical wrenches, had engine on stand with someone helping me.. we almost flipped the engine on its side and were fighting each other ! the one with the longest cheater bar usually wins. LOL

Default thanks

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. I'm sure that using one of these methods I will be able to remove it. I can guarentee that I will be putting the engine back in and bolting the trans. up to torque it back down on the new engine.

LIke said above, put in two of the flywheel bolts in the back of the crank, then put a breaker bar angled across them (angled against the loosening direction of the crank bolt) and hold the bar while someone loosens the crank bolt.

When I had my engine on a stand, I used a chain strap wrench to hold the pulley with my right hand, and used a 28" breaker bar in my left hand and pushed down on both at the same time. Bolt broke loose pretty easy.

Just got my bolt off right now, last night I was trying with a small impact gun rated around 400ft lbs, borrowed a big one rated over 625ft lbs and it barely broke a sweat taking off the bolt.

i know the post is old, but it helped me and will come in handy for others.

Holy old post batman.

FWIW, if a strong impact isn't available just stick a prybar throw the pulley and let it wedge itself against the bottom of the motor or the side. Then take a breaker bar and snap the bolt loose. Very easy.
