Default You'll be missed Cylinder 7 - Compression test results

After completing the H/C swap from hell ... taking 10wks, turning into a money pit, delays on parts, and just a bunch of other crap ... finally had her completed 3 weeks ago. It turned over and ran well, however it burned a ridiculous amount of oil. After about 5 mins of running (idle or otherwise), blueish tint smoke was bellowing out the exhaust. I put 50 miles on it and was waiting to get her tuned (this weekend, no less).

I searched on here and figured out it was burning oil because of ...
PCV system
Rocker Bolts not sealed properly
Valve Seal
Rings

Before I started taking stuff apart I decided to run a compression test to make sure there weren't any larger problems.

My results, 220-230 across the board except #7, which was 195. Testing it all again and #7 went down to 20. We decided to pour some oil directly into the 7 cylinder to see if that would change anything. Results:

190
50
20

I think it is the ring. If it was a Valve seal issue the compression should of stayed somewhat consistent after we poured the in? Instead it looks like the oil just seeped through.

Other symptoms:
- upon removing the spark plugs, all but #7 were extremely filthy. #7 was coated in gasoline.
- there is gasoline in the oil
- we removed the vacuum hoses and the car continued to run

I can definetly say this is a huge kick in the *****. Anybody have any comments or suggestions?

I will probably make another post after I do some research regarding what options I have now (my goal was 11's N/A, which shouldnt be that hard but is difficult as Fu<k when **** keeps breaking), that is, if I do not sell it.

Thanks for reading,

Sorry to hear... You should just build a forged 347 short and re-use your heads and cam...

Thats almost what happened to me, except mine is the #2 cylinder, and the leakdown didnt show as low pressure that you got. But i was definitely burning oil, the plug was crap and it smelled like fuel too. So i just bought a forged 347 and its going in next week.

Gotta be careful with dumping all this money into a setup. You POSITIVE the motor was ready to take this before you took it apart in the first place?

Maybe your #7 injector is leaking fuel! If you have that much gas on the spark plug this could be your problem, and excess fuel in the cylinder will wash the rings causing low compression. Pull the fuel rail out of the intake and turn on the key to see if it's leaking. You may just need one injector, not a motor.

Default ring

could have been a stuck injector or broken ring. Or a stuck injector that lead to a broken ring

Thanks guys, hard times.

5.3LJimmy - thanks for the advice. That is exactly what we did when we 1st saw the #7 plug. Injectors seemed fine.

Specialized - she dyno'd 308/328 stock in the summer and was running strong. Didnt think twice about modifying when I pulled her out of storage this year ... which was my mistake. Getting an education from the school of hard knocks

You need to figure out what caused this so it doesn't happen to your new motor too.

Thanks for reading,
Do a leakdown test on that piston, could be you messed up the seal while changing springs or seal wasn't seated.

I always say to folks to do a compression + leakdown before swap.

That does suck. It must be hard having done all that work only to have something mess up. Hope all turns out well in the end.

speed_demon24 - I have an idea ... but I do not want to talk out of my *** until I talk with some of the guys who helped me build it

Marc '99T/A - 127K miles. It dyno'd 308/328 at 117K miles. Changed lifters, oil pump, timing chain, pushrods, gaskets, springs, and valves at the same time as the H/C (the problem probably occured before the H/C swap though - it looks like I modified an already toasted motor)

PREDATOR-Z - thanks for the heads up. I am unfamiliar with such a test, do you know where I can find a How-To?

I am in the exact position you are only with a couple thousand more miles...literally. Just haven't gotten around to getting the leak-down test completed. So now it sits while the money is being saved for a possible forged motor...
