Default For those with 402ci Builds in a F-body

I recently talked to a guy and he said that a friend of his built a 402 with Eagle 4.000" Crank, Eagle 6.125" Rods, and one of the Rod Bolts scuffs on the Oil Pan where the little curve in it is. This is with the F-body Oil Pan.

Anyone else have this happen to them, or heard of it?

I've seen that with 4.125 strokes, but not 4"

The wierd thing is that he said when he spun it by hand, nothing hit. When it was in the Car running is when it scuffed. I wouldn't think it flexed that much..

Yes, they will hit with a 4 inch crank. turn the motor over til the front crank journal is at its lowest point. measure with a straight edge and ruler. I believe the measurement is 1.25 roughly. Then measure the pan the same way. I wanna say that measurement is just over an inch deep. Add the thickness of the gasket in, and you come up about a 1/8 inch too short, or too close.
I grind the corners off the rod bolts, and clearance the pan a little.
I've built a few of them, any other questions, post or PM, I'd be glad to help.
Jeez, merv, 5000 posts since last year? Do you ever sleep?

I try sleep every now and then..it's over-rated..

Right now I have nothing to work on..the Rotating Assembly is at the Machine Shop getting Balanced. Looks like I have to clearance the Pan tomorrow..hopefully there is enough there to work with. Personally I won't grind on any Bolts.
Then I got to get the Throttle Linkage setup for the Swap..I am making an Adjustable Cable.

Theres not enough meat in the pan. Dont be skeered to knock the corners off the bolt heads. On the i beam rods, ya gotta grind the **** out of em to clear the cam in a stroker motor. gen 1 motors, lt1s, etc

I got the ESP Series H-Beam Rods..from what it looks like that is the only spot where I have a problem, every where else clears.

Yeah I know. Intimately familiar wit dem janks. Its only one corner of one bolt head that hits. When you grind the corner off it, you're not even taking away bot about .060 worth of material. No big deal. call me tomorrow 757-424-1740. I'll tell ya exactly how to do it.

Is that from the Pan, or the Bolt. Personally I'm tryin to not alter the Bolts in any way..
I have some scrap 1/16" Aluminum sheet here, I can grind the Pan and hopefully get ahold of a Welder here to patch it up if need be. That will probalby be the best way.
I wonder if you double the Gasket if that will help..might mess with the Pickup though..

The only part I would worry about with double gasketing it, is the gasket is under pressure where the oil goes thru the oil filter. Not crazy about the double gasket thing cause of that.
Grinding the bolt heads is no big deal, really. You're only taking off a little of the corner of the head. you wont even heat it up much.
Like I said before, on the I beam rods in strokers, you have to grind the **** out of em to clear the cam.

It's not uncommon on C5 pans. Mine was ground to clear.

This should work. I Hammer-checked it with a Ball Pean, and it didn't crack, so I should be alright..It's about 1/16" deep of a grove that I cut.
