HELP; I think I royally screwed up my H/C install.
Ok, well I got a Comp adj timing set to go along with the setup. One problem I ran into was that I didn't see a "dot" on the crank gear to align with the dot on the cam gear. I saw some kind of markings on the back side of the gear, so I figured that must be the "dot" and marked that tooth with a magic marker, and used that tooth as the tooth to lign up with the cam's dot tooth. I put everything back together and the car ran like total *** (but it ran). I'm pretty sure I fu**ed up on setting up the cam in the first place.
Sooooo...... i tear the car back down today and try to figure out the problem. Well lo and behold, there is a little triangle stamped in the crank gear pointing to one of the teeth (i'm assuming that's the tooth i should've lined up with the cam gear's dot).
My question is......... how do I get everything lined up the way it needs to be so I can get the damn car back on the road and have some fun? I can't just take the chain off and turn the crank b/c I end up running into PTV contact. Do I need to pull my heads back off to do this right? I've been dicking around with this project for waaaayyyy too long now and need to get it wrapped up.

Read the damn directions on how to use the adjustable timing set, the crank gear has 3 different settings on the crank alone. There are different symbols to symbolize different degree settings.

Look at option 2 TDC method.
Rotate your motor over by hand until your cam gear and crank gear are dot to dot like you set them up as earlier. At this position, piston 1 and 6 should be at top dead center.

i'm not trying to be critical in asking this question, i was just wondering why you got an adjustable timing set if you didn't degree the cam in?
i was alittle unsure which dot to use (the Cloytes directions weren't that clear to me), but it eased my mind after i degreed it in, i knew it was right where it should be.

his definition of crap and yours may be totally different.
It might be the tune. They can do some screwy things. Mine ran like crap before my rocker arm bolt broke because the tune was stock.

-Oh no, everyone would agree that this thing runs like crap; there is no power, it backfires, and wants to die out.
-I got the adj. timing set before I knew about how the cam was cut (if it ended up with any advance ground into it).
-I accidently set the 4* of retard when I first installed the cam. Today I set it up at 0* adv/ret.
-I do have an exhaust leak at the pass. side collector, but I'm not thinking it would affect the car that much.

At only 4 degrees retarded, I doubt you damaged anything (unless you are running WAAY too big of a cam). People advance and retard cams that much all the time.
I suspect that you need to check all of the connections on the wiring harness to make sure they are all plugged in. "Running like crap and backfiring" suggests to me that one of the injector/ignition coil harnesses isn't plugged in.
